Thomas R. Carroll, 65, of Harrold, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at his home.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the United Methodist Church, Highmore with Pastor Jenene Earl officiating. Burial will be in the Highmore Cemetery. Tom was born to Dan and Alvina (Hoffman) Carroll on March 5, 1945 in Pierre, South Dakota. Tom attended Harrold School through his junior year and then quit to work on the family ranch. He married Marlene Olson in 1965 and together had four children: Brenda June, Bernie Ray, Tana Lynne and Justin Thomas.
Tom’s greatest passion was watching his family work on the family ranch and riding the quarter horses he dearly loved and raised. His most loved joy was watching his grandchildren grow and pursue their own dreams and talents. Each one of his grandchildren had a love for cattle and horses just like grandpa. Watching his kids’ rodeos, go kart racing and fixing up their cars brought great joy to Tom.
The families that shared in Tom’s life were his wife of 46 years, Marlene Carroll; four children: Brenda Carroll and son, Thane; Bernie (Connie) Carroll and children, Austin, Lacey, Collin and Cheyenne; Tana (Jon) Gortmaker and son, Lane; Justin (Amber) Carroll and son, Stetson; one sister, Gladys Buechler; mother-in-law, June Olson and numerous other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Alvina Carroll; step-father, Roy Kathner; one brother-in-law, Dalmer Buechler; and father-in-law, LeRoy Olson.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Tom’s arrangements.

It’s not the end of the trail for me,
I’m just headin’ out to the light I see.
Beyond those mountains there’s a soft glow;
It’s gettin’ brighter the closer I go.
It’s like the beginning of a new day,
And the trail I’m followin’ leads the way.
I feel sure there’s friends and family ahead,
And they’ve set up camp on a brand new spread.
Yes, I can hear the voices callin’ my name,
sayin’, “Welcome Tom, sure glad you came,
This new range is special, you’ll like it here,
There’s grass for your horses, the streams are clear,
The cattle are gentle and never stampede,
And in every direction there’s plenty of feed.
If you’re thinkin’ it sounds too good to be true,
it’s not—’cause the Boss made a promise to you.
If you’d ride for his brand, be honest and square,
He’d relive all your pain, and remove every care.
He was mighty pleased with your life on earth,
That you did your best, and proved your worth.
So step off your horse, and tied on up,
Your friends are all waiting to pour you a cup.
We’ll talk about old days, as time allows,
’cause startin’ tomorrow you’ll be workin’ cows!”

Marlene and family,
I will always remember Tom as “my cousin with the horses”! When we came to SD to visit, Tom always offered to let us ride the horses.
Tom was a warm, loving, giving man with a big heart and a big smile! (He was ornery, too!) He will be missed!
Our thoughts and prayers,
