George C. Wellner, 84, of Chamberlain and formerly of Miller, died Thursday, May 24, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00a.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Fort Thompson, with Father Chuck Wonch officiating. Burial was in St. Placidus Catholic Cemetery, Dunkin, directed by Reck Funeral Home of Miller. There was a 7:00p.m. wake service Monday, May 28 at the church in Fort Thompson.
George was born January 21, 1923 to George and Nellie (Waugh) Wellner in Chamberlain. He attended school in Chamberlain before entering the United States Army on March 9, 1945. During World War II, he served in the Philippines. On November 27, 1946, he was honorably discharged. He married Mary Lenore Hart on December 20, 1948 in Stephan, SD. He worked for Lambert Knippling. George and his family later moved south of Miller where they purchased a farm. All of their children were raised on the farm. Mary passed away May 29, 2000. At George’s passing, he was living in Chamberlain.
He enjoyed raising and showing his purebred Suffolk sheep. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. George was a member of the Dunkin Catholic Church.
George is survived by his children: Steve (Laura) Wellner of Chamberlain, Bobbi (Rhonda) Wellner of Powley, WY, Stanley Wellner of Fort Thompson, and Tracy Mitchell of Mitchell; grandchildren: Lisa, Michael, Cody, Tana, Danny, Lance, and Leah; great grandchildren: Seth and Connor; brother: Frank Wellner of Miller and sister: Patty of Houston, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary Lenore; one son Merle; and two sisters: Dorothy and Margaret.
