Sandra Rae was born December 8, 1952 in Miller, South Dakota to Frank and Pauline (DeGeest) Lingscheit.  She spent her entire life in Hyde County.  She was raised on the farm, where she developed a lifelong love of rural life and the care and tending of all types of animals.  She spent her first three years of elementary school at Loomis School, after which, the family moved into Highmore and she then completed her education in the Highmore school system.

During the time they lived in Highmore, Sandra’s parents became foster parents and she soon found herself filling the shoes of care-taker to help her mother out.  Many foster children passed through their house.  Some have remained part of the family throughout the years.

She met Johnny Fred Bremer while in high school, and they were married October 2, 1971 in Ree Heights, South Dakota.  Sandra and Johnny Fred made their home at the Bremer homestead where she spent long hours farming and ranching beside her husband on the family farm.  To this union, one daughter, Pandy, was born.

She had a love of Boston Terriers as she had several for childhood pets.  This inspired her and John to begin a purebred dog breeding business, which she still operated at the time of her death.

She and John also became interested in wildlife conservation and developed great habitat for deer and pheasants, eventually moving into supervised hunting.  Unfortunately, John passed away in 2005, before the project was complete and Sandy continued working with this wild life dream of theirs, making it a successful hunting destination.  She often enjoyed watching the game from her picture window.

She derived much enjoyment from a number of her favorite activities, including hunting, fishing, camping and “Old West” competitive shooting where she and John were known as “Sassy Sandy” and “Trapper John”.

Sandy enjoyed 4-H as a member, leader and judge.  Her love of dogs was a factor when she fell into a cooperative venture with FFA.  For many years she worked with young people at the state fair in the animal barn/nursery.  She sold puppies she raised and helped FFA members learn about the proper care and treatment of dogs and many other animals.  For those years of involvement, she received an award last fall of which meant a great deal to her.

About five years ago, Sandy developed a relationship with a former family friend, Skeet Smith (Uncle Scooter).  They have enjoyed each other’s company and have been involved in numerous activities with horses including trail rides, wagon trains and cattle gatherings.

Her memory will be cherished by her daughter, Pandy (Richard) Rezac of Highmore; her two grandsons, Cordell and Chancey; two sisters: Sharon (John) Runestad of Highmore and Norma (Gene) Carey of St. Paul, MN; special friend, Skeet Smith of Highmore; several nieces, nephews and friends that meant so much to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one nephew and her parents-in-law.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Sandy’s arrangements.

  10. I am so sorry for your loss, I know Sandra will be so very missed! I only met her a couple times and talked to her on the phone a few times with dealings for the Dakota Pet Breeders Association. But I know from close friends of hers that she had great love for her family! Anyone who has a passion for her dogs as Sandra did is a kindred spirit. Bless you loved ones of Sandra’s!

  11. I just met Sandy and Skeet on a camping trip this past Memoral Day weekend. I sat next to her at dinner and had a great time. She was so happy and smiled a lot. At the resturaunt the waitress referred to Skeet as her husband and Sandy elbowed him and giggled and said, “she thinks we’re married”. You could tell they enjoyed eachothers company. She also made a point to save all the table scraps for her dog Fancy whom I could tell she loved so much. A great lady….sad I didnt get to spend more time with her.

  12. It’s hard to lose someone you love, one who’s been such a special part of your life and your world. I hope there is comfort in knowing that the one thing you’ll always have is the memories of that loved one. I will always be greatful for the help that Sandy gave my family when we were going though a tough time. My thoughts and prayers are with the families.

  13. My heart felt thoughts and prayers go out to Skeet and Sandy’s family. I was honored to have met her in my life time. I will always remember the buggy rides in a couple Highmore Parades and singing Christmas Caroles last year while riding in the parade and around town. She was a fun loving person and will be missed. My you find comfort in knowing she is at peace with Our Lord. God Bless, shar
