Marvin J. Speck, 87, of Faulkton, passed away, Friday, June 17, 2011 in Ipswich.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Faulkton with Fr. Chester Murtha officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors. Visitation was held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2011 at Luce Funeral Home, Faulkton with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.
Marvin John Speck was born June 7, 1924 to Carl A. and Martina M. (Koehn) Speck in Rockham, SD. He attended school in Faulkton. Following high school Marvin enlisted in the United State Army, serving during World War II.
Marvin married Donna Kay Sievers on December 16, 1946 in Faulkton. To this union five children were born.
He worked as a butcher and farmer but spent the largest majority of his life as a painter; being able to do this until the time of his death.
Marvin was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion in Faulkton. In his free time Marvin loved fishing, playing cards, watching sporting events, and traveling. Every winter he was able to visit family in Missouri and Georgia.
Survivors include his five children: David Speck, Faulkton; Chuck (Mary) Speck, Foristell, Mo., Jim Speck, Faulkton, Steve (Denise) Speck, Aberdeen, and Lori (Greg) Verjan, Sharpsburg, Ga.; 14 grandchildren: Hunter(Jessica) Speck, Faulkton, Jessica Speck, Faulkton, Michael Speck, Goose Creek, S.C., Terry (Kenny) Rodriguez, Moncks Corner, S.C., Dan (Selina) Gierer, Kansas City, Mo., Jeff (Amber) Gierer, Wentzville, Mo., Ashley (Bryan) Schmidt, Aberdeen, Rocky (Kaylee) Speck, Faulkton, Colby Speck, Faulkton, Nathan, Scott and Chelsea Speck, all of Aberdeen, BriAnn Lehman and Payton Verjan, both of Sharpsburg, Ga.; ten great-grandchildren; sister: Delores Johnson, Carol Stream, IL , and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Tena Speck; grandson, Travis Speck and one sister, Regina Wherry.

I am so sorry to hear of Marv’s death. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Just imagine the card games that are taking place in heaven and all of the stories being told. Oh and what stories they would be. You have our deepest sympathy.
Sorry for your loss. He was a nice man.
I sure am going to miss that old guy. We have lived by Marv since we moved to Faulkton and he knew our every move. I’ll miss seeing him in the mornings at Cenex or by the post office reading his magazines or coming in the office for a glass of water. He will be missed by everyone in town. Our sympathy is with the Speck family in the coming days.
Dave, Chuck, Jim and all, I am so sorry for your loss of a wonderful father and friend to all. I pray the Lord will bring you comfort and peace with many beautiful memories of your time togther.
