Pauline was born August 2, 1929 in Pawnee, OK to Elda Kirk and Helen Marie (Hise) Reed. She was raised in the Pawnee area where she graduated from High School in 1947.

Pauline helped raise her two brothers and three sisters as her mother worked full time. On September 5, 1947 she married Hugh Maize in Portales, NM. For the next five years they made their home on a ranch near Dalhart, TX. Their sons, Ray and Marvin where born there.

Hugh and Pauline moved to a ranch 32 miles northwest of Ft. Pierre, SD. There she helped cook for the ranch hands and enjoyed the ranch life tremendously. In 1960, the family moved to a ranch five miles east of Gettysburg, where they started raising exotic cattle, Gelbvieh, Limousine, and her favorite Watusi. She showed Gelbvieh at many stock shows and worked very hard promoting the Gelbvieh Association. Pauline handled all the registrations, naming and promotion of the Gelbvieh as well as their registered quarter horses.

After the boys were raised, she went to work at the Oahe Manor, first as a nurse’s aide and then as a bookkeeper. Pauline also wrote the Oahe Manor Column news for the Potter County News for many years. She retired in 1990 after 25 years of employment.

Pauline enjoyed showing and touring their antique restored car collection. She worked very hard helping on the ranch, keeping a large yard and enjoyed helping others. Ace, Pauline’s beloved cocker spaniel will be with her on the journey to heaven. She loved her God and belonged to the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband: Hugh of Gettysburg; two sons: Ray (Bonnie) of Pierre and Marvin (Patti) of Las Vegas, NV; sisters: Joann Bazil of Arvada, CO, Doris (Glen) Arey of Weatherford, TX and Linda (Rod) Hover of Arkansas City, KS; and many nieces and nephews who enjoyed visiting Hugh and Pauline at the ranch.

Pauline was preceded in death by mother and stepfather: Helen and Gayle Fussell and her two brothers, Paul and Dale.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Pauline’s arrangements.
