Joseph Sautner

Joseph Sautner, 89, of Gettysburg, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Pierre.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg with Fr. Jerry Kopel officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the church with a liturgical wake service at 7:00 p.m.
Joseph John Sautner was born September 9, 1922 in Bowdle, SD to Joseph F. and Mary (Wentz) Sautner. The family moved to Potter County when Joe was 6 years old. He attended country school where he had to walk to every day. At age 12 Joe went and lived with his grandparents: John and Margaret Sautner.
In 1944 he went south to Liberal, Kansas working with a combine crew. In 1950 he married Eva B. Brandt in Sidney, NE. While in Sidney Joe drove truck hauling sand, and helped a local farmer. He also worked for the City of Sidney hauling garbage and at the local filling station. At age 62 Joe retired from the City and returned to Gettysburg. He went to work with his nephew, Jerry Sautner and later managed the City landfill for two years.
In 2009 Joe relocated to Pierre where he entered the Golden Living Center.
Joe spent his free time raising horses, recycling and tinkering. He believed that “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”
Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a past member of the Elks Club.
Those left to cherish his life are his children: Jackie Miller of Napa, ID and Danny Joe (Jennifer) Sautner of Riverside, CA; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers: Peter (Barbara) Sautner and Chris (Loretta) Sautner; one sister: Stella (Glenn) Hyuck and one son-in-law: Fred Miller.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Joseph’s arrangements.
