Harold Witte
May 22, 1938 ~ August 11, 2007
Harold L. Witte, 69, of Orient passed away Saturday, August 11, 2007 at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30a.m. Friday, August 17, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Orient. Burial was in the church cemetery with Military Honors, directed by Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton. A time for fellowship and a luncheon followed the burial. A rosary service was held at 7:00p.m., Thursday, August 16, at the church.
Casketbearers were Lenny Witte, Paul Witte, Brent Witte, Jeff Witte, Brian VanWell and Chad Lindbloom. Honorary Bearers were all of his grandchildren and the Orient Coffee Crew. Reader was Delton Witte. Organist was Joyce Arneson, and ushers were Greg Selting and Jim McGrath.
Harold Witte, the son of Harold Sr. and Alfreda (Bode) Witte, was born on May 22, 1938. He married Mary Ann Vopat on March 5, 1962. To this union, six children were born.
After graduating from Orient High School, Harold joined the Navy. Upon his honorable discharge, Harold returned to the Orient Area. He worked as a farm hand for various families before beginning to farm with his father, and later being joined by his brother Terry. After his retirement from the farm he moved into Orient.
Harold dedicated his life to the family farm and his family. He looked forward to camping and fishing. He was an avid fisherman and received Proud Angler status in SD. Harold was a member of the VFW, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and the Orient Coffee Club.
His memory lives on with his children: Lori (Steve) Walker (Eric, Kristi, (son Zachary), Michelle, Samantha and Alex) of Pierre, SD, Brenda (Larry) Tebben Jake, Jamie and Julie) of Redfield, SD, Vickie (Sean) Horan (Kelley and Elizabeth) of Pierre, SD, Gerald (Melody) Witte (Lincoln and Madison) of Winner, SD, and Duke (Kim) Witte (Schyler, Arionne, Madalynn and Drake) of Aberdeen, SD.
He is also survived by his siblings Ray (Barb) Witte of Ortley, SD, Ken (Hazel) Witte of Huron, SD, Bill (Sherry) Witte of Gettysburg, SD, Don (Judy) Witte of Aberdeen, SD, Darlene (Ken) VanWell of Hoven, SD and Terry (Carol) Witte of Orient, SD and Beth Witte of Seneca, SD, mother-in-law, Katherine Vopat of Faulkton; sisters-in-law: Barb (Dennis) Lindbloom of Pierre, SD, Sandy (Pat) McGrath of Faulkton, SD and Ellen (Jim) Selting of Eau Claire, WI.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann; parents, Harold and Alfreda; daughter, Mary Ann; grandson, Kyle James; brother, Bob Witte; brother-in-law, Roger Vopat; nephews, Chuck Witte and Chip Lindbloom; nieces, Deann Witte and Julie VanWell and father- in-law Lambert Vopat.
