Wayne B. Hamlin, 85, of Highmore, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Highmore with Fr. Paul Nereparmpil officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Highmore with military honors. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 22, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Highmore with a 7:00 p.m. wake service.

Wayne Bernard Hamlin was born November 3, 1926 to Wallace & Elsie (Samp) Hamlin at Holabird, SD. He attended grade school in Holabird and Highmore High School.

Wayne enlisted in 1949 with the United States Army, serving one year in Korea. He was honorably discharged December 11, 1951.

On January 31, 1953 Wayne was united in marriage to Leona Weber at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Highmore, SD. They made their home on the family farm south of Holabird, where they raised their six children, until 1983. Wayne retired from farming and they moved to Highmore.

Wayne was a hard worker. When they first moved to Highmore, he did some custom farm work and later worked as a custodian for the Highmore School, Highmore Golf Course and the Hyde County ASCS office and in his spare time he would buy, remodel, and sell homes. In his retirement you could find him enjoying a cup of coffee at the City Shop or Pioneer Garage where he was able to visit with many friends.

Wayne’s life will be cherished by his wife Leona of Highmore; his children: Ward (Tonita) of Cedar Rapids, IA, Bruce (Jane) of Bellevue, NE, Cathy (Arlyn) Groen of Sioux Falls, Mark (Tina) of Highmore, Sharon Boekelheide of Northville and Pam (Robert) Andersen of Howard; 17 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his brothers: Richard of Highmore and Leonard (Eunice) of Ocean Park, WA; sister, Elaine (Les) Ashdown of Highmore and sister-in-law, Ruth Hamlin of Arlington, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Elsie; his brother, Jack; sister-in-law, Isabelle Hamlin; brothers-in-law, Frederick Hale and Donald Heying; and nephew Pat Hale.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Wayne’s arrangements.

  4. Thinking of you all. Wayne was such a great guy. He always had time to visit. His famous greating with that special way he had. “Hey” I’m sure that’s the first thing he said to God when he got there. “Hey”. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  10. Love you Grandpa. I will miss you making me ice cream cones or milkshakes when I visit and staying up late watching TV, and amung many other things-your smile. Thank you for being such a wonderful person and a wonderful grandpa. You made everyone who knew you feel special and important to you with that smile and your unconditional kindness. I will miss you lots, as many will.
