Hazel J. Simons, 86, of Miller, SD and formerly of St. Lawrence, SD, passed peacefully surrounded by loving family on Saturday May 19, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant.  Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery at Wessington.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2012 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.

Hazel Haigh was born October 1, 1925 in Frankfort, South Dakota to John and Florence (Belcher) Haigh.  Hazel attended and graduated from Redfield High School.  She attended Northern Normal School and taught rural school in northwest Beadle County.  On November 3, 1945, Hazel married Arnold E. Simons at Wessington, South Dakota.  To this union of sixty years were born eight children; Lloyd (Joan) Simons of Pierre, Rita (Mike) Beaner of Miller, Vera (Dennis) Blachford of Blue Springs, MO, Ruth (James) Waddell of Kansas City, MO, Verna Cleaver of Lincoln, NE, Gale (Mike) Poole of Marietta, GA, and Gloria (Mark) Rowen of Sioux Falls.

Hazel’s greatest pleasure was her family.  She enjoyed her numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved gardening, her flowers and bird watching.  She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents; son, Loren; three brothers; and a granddaughter.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Hazel’s arrangements.
