Warren “Red” Behmen, 94, of Gettysburg and formerly of Hopkins, MN passed away Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg, SD.


A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday June 21, 2012 at Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg with Fr. Jerry Kopel officiating.

Warren Bernard Behmen was born November 19, 1917 in Minneapolis, MN to Elmer and Martha (Christopherson) Behmen. Red graduated from Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, MN in 1936.

Red enlisted with the United States Army Infantry on March 22, 1942. He served during WWII and was honorably discharged on October 16, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Veronica Ann Richter on May 8, 1948 in Wadena, MN. They made their home in Minneapolis, Anoka and Hopkins, MN where he worked as a bricklayer and cement mason.

Red enjoyed spending time with family and friends, duck hunting, bowling, golfing and participating in choir. While living in Hopkins, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Pheasant Run Golf Course, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Choir, the Nocturnal Adoration Society, the St. Anthony Study Club for over 40 years, and the V.F.W.  After moving to Gettysburg in October of 2009, Red became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Medicine Rock Senior Center.

Red’s life will be cherished by his wife Veronica of Gettysburg; daughters: Penny (Doug) Grev of St. Paul, MN, Debbie (David) Carter of Oahu, HI, Geri (Bryan) Hause of Gettysburg, SD and Therese (Jeff) Bulen of Lakeville, MN; grandchildren: Nick (Stephanie) Marty, Andrea (Clint) Powell, Matt (Jackie) Grev, James Grev, Yolanda, Jeneile, David, Charles, Warren and Chantelle Carter, Haley Ann and Jeffery Grant Bulen; six great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Gen Behmen of Edina, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Martha; daughter, Mary Ann; sisters, Lucille and Elner; and brother, Glenn.

Heaven has gain an extra special angel! “Mr. B.” was one of a kind, had a great sense of humor, warm & loving smile complete with hug, a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa!   3. It was our privilege to provide Red with a gathering place to participate in the many activities offered at our facility. Red was a great employee (he retired at age 90!), volunteer and most importantly a friend to all of us at the Hopkins Activity Center.     I have missed seeing you and Red at mass at St. Joe’s, and at the pancake breakfasts and the fall festival. I was so sorry to learn of his death.
