Betty Phillips, 76, of Highmore, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.

Funeral service were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Highmore with Pastor Peggy Stempson officiating.  Burial will be in the Highmore Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2013 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.

On August 10, 1936, Betty was born to Willie and Virginia (Walker) Bobbitt at Sandy Level, Virginia.  Betty grew up in Sandy Level, Virginia before moving to Danville Virginia, where she attended and graduated from Dan River High school in 1955.  On December 20, 1958, Betty was united in marriage to Dale Phillips in Emporia Virginia. They were blessed with two children, David Wayne and Patricia Dawn.

 

Dale and Betty traveled to many beautiful places while Dale was in the Service.  After his retirement from the Army in 1971, they move to Highmore, South Dakota where they lived on the family farm north of Highmore for many years.  They owned and operated an upholstery shop up until Dale’s death in 1976.  Betty then ran the Frosty Freeze with Virginia Kusser in which they eventually sold.  Betty then went to work for the Hyde County School District for 22 years until she retired in 2002.

Betty was an active and faithful member of the United Methodist Church, where she loved her bible study. She was involved with the boy scouts for 20 years.  She was also awarded the Bob Thingelstad Award for her service to the community.  Betty was a beloved lady in the community.  She will be missed by all and always had a kind smile and a comforting word for anyone whom needed it.  Betty loved going to Pierre with the girls!!  Betty was truly loved and will be missed by all.

Grateful to have shared in Betty’s life were her two children: David Wayne Phillips of Castlewood, SD and Patricia Dawn Miller (special friend, Scott) of St. Cloud, MN; seven grandchildren: Crystal Strawn of Monticello IA, Christopher Miller of Dallas TX, Alex Miller of St Cloud MN, Tyler Phillips of Watertown SD, Trenton Phillips of Castlewood SD, Christina Preble of  Castlewood SD and Nichol Bredvik of Watertown, SD; seven great grandchildren: Kylie Jo, Gage, Gavin, Alexis Lee, Elizabeth Kay, Tanner Lee and Emma Jo; brother, Jimmy Bobbitt of Florida; sister, Peggy Newby of Chatham, Virginia; aunt, Audrey Bliss of Granville, Virginia; and childhood friend, Betty Alderson of Granville, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Phillips; parents, Willie and Virginia Bobbitt, father-in-law, Lowell Philips and mother-in-law, Mildred Phillips.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Betty’s arrangements.

  1. Betty was such a special lady and I will never forget her being one of the very greatest lunch line ladies to ever be at Highmore High School and then a great customer of ours at Midwest Coop. Betty, you will be missed by all who knew you.

  7. I had gotten to know Betty over the past 10 years. She was so kind and caring to others, driving some that needed transportation to the center and church. We had just had our cataract surgeries the same days and shared transportation. She had such a good sense of humor. I enjoyed visiting with her.
    My thoughts and prayers go out to you. She will be missed.

  8. Just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of all of you. It’s hard to say good bye to the ones you love.. I haven’t seen Betty in years, but would think of her every now & then, especially when we would sit down to play UNO. How many hours did we sit at the kitchen table and play games and smoke cigs!!!! Loved doing that… She always invited everyone in no matter what and treated us like family… She was a great Mom!!!! My Heart is with you, Karen

  9. Betty was a favorite niece, and I will miss her greatly. I enjoyed talking with her and always enjoyed sending her funny birthday cards and we always shared a laugh.

  11. Betty was my dear friend since we were 9 year old. We have remained friends for all these years and I will miss her dearly. We have not seen each other bin a while but were able to talk often.

    Anyone who knew Betty loved her. She was such a genuine and authentic woman. I first knew her from the school lunchroom where she always greeted us all with a smile that melted away our cares. In more recent years I loved our talks at the Senior Center particularly those about her growing up in Virginia. On occasion I would deliver meals to her door and for having had this opportunity I will always be grateful.
    It was a pleasure to know Betty and I will sincerely miss her. LaVaughn B.
