Jeanette Westphal, 82, of Gettysburg, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Avera Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Grace Bible Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Jeff Adel and Pastor Ken Cartlidge officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery. Visitation was held two hours prior to the service at the church.

Jeanette Westphal was born November 21, 1930, to Lillian (Maquardt) and George Adams at Gettysburg.  She attended school in Gettysburg and graduated in 1948.  She attended Chillicathe Business College, returning in January of 1949 to work for P.D. Peterson in the Potter County Welfare Office.

On April 3, 1949, she married Glenn A. Westphal at Lake Benton, MN.  In June of that year, they moved to the Lee Westphal farm west of Agar.  In 1951, they moved to the home place west of Gettysburg, moving into Gettysburg in 1984.

Jeanette loved to cook, which showed as she participated in many State Beef Cook-off’s and won many blue ribbons at the fair. She loved to share new recipes.  Because of her love for children, she started Mom’s Morning Out at Grace Bible Church. Toddlers were dropped off so young mothers could attend a Bible study.

She was chairman of the Swimming Pool Committee which helped keep the pool open.  She was also Co-Chairman of Gettysburg Right to Life.  Jeanette was a member of the VFW and the Hospital Auxiliary. In 1998 she was crowned Queen of the Hospital Auxiliary’s Spring Fling.

On December 18, 1981, she became a born again Christian and in March of 1982 she became a member of Grace Bible Church and served faithfully as the church janitor for 16 years.  After Glenn’s death in 2005, her Parkinson’s disease progressed, and she became a resident of the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg where she resided until her death.

Survivors include daughters: Glenda (Jeff) Varnell, Denver, Colorado, Lynette (Ken) Zimmerman, Waukesha, Wisconsin, Connie (Mark) Knell, Bismarck, North Dakota; son, Bob (Deb) Westphal, Gettysburg, South Dakota; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Harriet Nelson, Houston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, daughter Cindy, her parents, three brothers, and one sister.
