Zona Ruth (Ford) Verdugt, 97, of St. Lawrence, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller, SD.

Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the St. Lawrence Community Church with Pastor Scot Tutt officiating.  Burial followed at the St. Lawrence Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Born in Hand County, SD on December 10, 1915, she was the second daughter of George E. and Elsie B. (Thompson) Ford.  She attended and graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1934.

On October 10, 1936, Zona married Leonard Verdugt in Yakima, WA; where both worked in orchards and on a dairy farm to make enough money to return to St. Lawrence, SD.  They had four daughters: Joanne, Kay, Virginia and Sharon.  Zona was a hard working pioneer woman who spent most of her life gardening, canning, pickling, cooking, milking, plucking, washing and mending.  After she and Leonard moved into St. Lawrence in 1950, she worked for Virgil Lips at The Sunset Motel cleaning rooms and at the desk (now the Dew Drop Inn), and later cooked for Leo Istas at the Driftwood Café.  Still, she thoroughly enjoyed a moment at the piano playing a tune or listening to her great-grandchildren sing a song.

In 2002 due to failing health, she moved into the Prairie Good Samaritan Center.  Zona was a member of the St. Lawrence Community Church.  She was a lifelong resident of Hand County.

Her memory will be cherished by her four daughters: Vera “Joanne” (Frank) Lockner of St. Lawrence, SD, Kay Carolyn (Don) Boynton of Covington, OK, Virginia Karen “Jeanie” Hannum of St. Lawrence, SD and Sharon Marie Verdugt (Ron Hammill), St. Lawrence, SD; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Elsie (Thompson) Ford; husband, Leonard Verdugt; her siblings, Verlyn (Melvin Hurd and Bud Blair) Hurd-Blair, Phyllis (Ogee) Johnson, and George (Viola) Ford, Jr; granddaughter, Renee (Boynton) Williams and grandson, Jeremy “JD” Gortmaker.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Zona’s arrangements.
