On July 7, 1945 he married Nora Austinson. They made their home with Walter’s family until moving to a farm south of Mound City. After that they moved to three different farms in the Selby area. This is where Walter worked for area farmers and the sale barn. They then moved to Warner for a short time until ending up in 1966 at the Mutsch Farm at Rockham where they remained until 1990 when Walter retired. He and Nora moved to Gettysburg where they cleaned the United Methodist Church for many years.
Walter enjoyed throughout his life, and in retirement, gardening, fishing, mowing lawns and attending the state fairs. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gettysburg.
Grateful to have shared his life is his loving wife of 62 years: Nora Rieger of Faulkton; three siblings: Alice (Milton “Bud”) Ford of Selby, Ida Ford of Watertown and Alvin (Nancy) Rieger of Alabama and one brother-in-law: Marvin Geffre of Ipswich.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Viola, Ruben and Rudolf.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Walter's arrangements.

Nora and Families:
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Walt will be greatly missed. I will miss our long talks on gardening skills and techniques. Walt sure did love his garden!
Nora,
I am so sorry for your loss. I will never forget Walter and you and how much fun we had over the years when mom was alive. I will always remember Walter for his ability to raise such a wonderful garden and his willingness to help me out when ever I needed.
May God be with you now and forever more.
God’s Blessings,
Marlys Hinckley
