Hazel Nagel
September 2, 1928 ~ February 2, 2014
Hazel M. Nagel, 85, of Gettysburg, passed away Sunday February 2, 2014 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Daniel Tews officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 7, 2014 at Luce Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.
Hazel was born September 2, 1928 in Lowry, SD to Jacob and Magdalena (Bieber) Hepper. She attended school in Lowry until she moved with her family to a farm north of Gettysburg in 1943.
Hazel married Erwin Nagel, January 9, 1949 at Christ Lutheran Church in Lebanon, SD. They made their home on the family farm northwest of Lebanon until 1976 when they moved to Gettysburg.
Hazel was active in the Ladies Aid when she was a member of Christ Lutheran church. She was a member of the American Legion auxiliary in Gettysburg.
Hazel's life was devoted to her husband and family. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and spoiling her grandchildren.
Hazel is survived by her son, Gary (Sandra) Nagel of Gettysburg, daughter, Peggy (Lynn) VanBockel of Howard; 4 grandchildren: Jennifer (Eric) Rothenbuehler, Jason (Bridget) Nagel, David (Carla) VanBockel, and Laura (Kevin) Shumaker; 10 great-grandchildren: Micah and Ryker Rothenbuehler, Makenna and Ethan Nagel, Natalie and Alexa VanBockel, Avery, Courtney, Chas and Max Shumaker; 5 siblings: Jim (Edith) Hepper of Tolstoy, Art Hepper of Gettysburg, Clyde Hepper of Rapid City, Patricia (Elwood) Moore of Sioux Falls, Don (Sandy) Hepper of Onida; 1 sister-in-law: Thelma Hepper of Gettysburg and 1 brother-in-law Paul Scheller of Sioux Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Erwin, and four siblings, Esther Knecht, Ruth Nagel, Arnold Hepper and Joyce Scheller.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Hazel’s arrangements.
