Don Cable, 81, of Miller, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society of Miller.
Celebration of his life will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Riverside Cemetery in Huron.
Donald Earl was born on September 8, 1932 to John James and Sarah Miranda (Bookstaver Shaw) Cable. He grew up and was raised on the family farm southwest of Wessington. He attended school in Wessington.
Don proudly served two campaigns, one mile from the front line as a supply Sergeant in the United States Army and during the Korean War in the 1950’s. Following the campaigns, Don married Yvonne Moody of Ree Heights on July 29, 1956. To this union four daughters were born: Robin, Donna, Brenda, and Sarah. He was always employed with local farmers until meeting the Venosdel family in Blunt, South Dakota. In 1962, Don moved his family along with the Venosdel family to Alva, Oklahoma with belly dump trucks. In 1970, he moved the family back to Pierre, South Dakota.
Don and Yvonne later divorced and he married Donna (Rath) Wurtz to whom which he later divorced and married LaJuna Murphy. They lived at Salt Lake City, Utah where Don worked with and trained race horses with chariots. He later moved to Freemont, NE where he had a stable where he bred and raised registered Paint horses. When his health began to fail, his daughter Robin, moved him and his horses to St. Lawrence. In 2013 he moved to Good Samaritan Society of Miller and remained there until his death.
His greatest joys in life were his children and teaching them all how to ride before they could walk. His passion was his horses. He had a great voice, loved to dance and was a square and round dance caller.
Don is survived by his four daughters; Robin (Randy) Sporrer of Miller, Donna (Randy) George of Hansen, NE, Brenda (Robert) Haseman of Summerset, and Sarah (Brent) Woodman of Kenesaw, NE; 18 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Cuppy of Vancouver, WA.
Preceding him in death were his parents, five sisters and their spouses, Evelyn (Wilbur) Schnabel, Florence (Donald) King, Maxine (Miles) Reeme, Janet (Raymond) Flanngan and Shirley (Roland) Berget; great granddaughter, Christine Yvonne Flesner and great grandson, Daimion James Hoit.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Don’s arrangements.
