Kay Martinmaas, 90, of Miller, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society of Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at St. Liborius Catholic Church, Polo with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant.  Burial followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Polo.  Visitation began at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2014 followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller.

Kathleen Clara was born on March 26, 1924 at the Faulk County Hospital in Faulkton to John and Louisa (Bowar) Schaefers.  She was a graduate of St. Liborius Grade School and Fairview High School.  Kay then attended one year of college in Mitchell.  She worked at First National Bank in Miller for three years until her marriage.  On June 10, 1946 she married Max Martinmaas.  They built a home and lived on the farm in Spring Township at Polo.

After marriage, she was a librarian at St. Liborius School for many years, worked in the school lunch program and later at the Hand County Library after moving to Miller.  She and Max moved to Miller in 1989.  Kay was a faithful member of the Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters, St. Liborius Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Catholic Church.  On April 5, 1989, Max passed away.  Kay continued to live in Miller until her death.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her eight children: Terry (Dianne) Martinmaas of Sioux Falls, Jeanie Rhodes of Maple Grove, MN, Carolyn (Rick) Forman of Miller, Mary Kay (John) Davis of Monroe, WA, Teresa (Cory Anderson) Vanberg of Redwing, MN, Neal Martinmaas of Sioux Falls, Todd (Belinda) Martinmaas of Brandon and Alan (Shelly) Martinmaas of Clear Lake; one brother, Jack (JoAnn) Schaefers of Polo; 21 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, John in 1963; husband, Max in 1989; son-in-law, Doug Rhodes; three sisters: Dorine Venjohn, Sally Bushfield, and Genny Locke; and one great granddaughter, Ebony.

  3. I am so sorry to hear of Kay’s passing–mom always enjoyed visiting with her when they both lived at the Miller Arms and would look forward to seeing her at the Nursing Home–she was a very kind lady and will be greatly missed
