Alida Mae (Arpan) Chasing Hawk
Went to heaven peacefully September 14, 2008, she spent her last days with her family. Alida was born to Stephen and Florence (Larrabee) Arpan on July 5, 1940. Alida has two siblings and they are Zane Arpan and Kenny Arpan. She spent her childhood in Igloo, SD going to school at Provo until the family returned back to Old Agency, were she went to school until her union with John Russell Red Bear. They were blessed with four children: Darla Red Bear married to Emery Bacon from Rocky Boy MT, Dawn Red Bear from Westerville OH, Damon Red Bear from Winner SD and Wayne A. Red Bear.
Alida received her Associates Degree on May 1989; she then furthered her education to obtain her Bachelors Degree on May 1992 from Northern State College in Aberdeen SD. After graduation she began her employment with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe at the Employee Assistance Program as the Counselor from March 1993 until February 2005 due health reasons.
She was a member of the (EAPA) Native American Employee Assistance Professionals Association Chapter of the America’s since 1993 and the (NAWA) Native American Woman’s Association.
Throughout her years she held various jobs; Clerk/Bookkeeper for Sana Arc Saddlery, Head Cook for the Dupree Elderly Nutrition Center, Boys Adolescent Shelter for the Sacred Heart Center, Cook/Baker for the Ridge House Restaurant, a tutor for the Native American Program at Northern State College.
Alida enjoyed her arts and crafts, fellowship with other church members, was a lay reader for the Episcopal Church and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren Fred E. & Jonni Rose Bacon.
Alida met James Chasing Hawk and they spent their time traveling, spending time with family and friends. Due to Alida’s need for continual health care, Darla & Emery welcomed her into their home for additional care and attention. Alida entered the Northern Montana Care Center, were she was able to continue to see Darla and her grandchildren every other day; she received many cards from her friends and family, which brought her happiness.
She is preceded by her parents Stephen & Florence (Larrabee) Arpan, her son Wayne A. Red Bear, and her special friend James Chasing Hawk.
Funeral services will be held June 06, 2009 under the direction of Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte, SD.

i WANT TO SAY SO MUCH BUT WILL NARROW IT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR TAKING CARE OF HER AS GOOD DAUGHTERS ARE TAUGHT TO. AUNTIE WAS SPECIAL TO ME AS ALL MY RELATIVES ARE. I FEEL THE LOSS WAY DOWN HERE. THINKING OF YOU WITH PRAYERS AND SYMPATHY.
Our heartfelt condolences to you, Darla and Dawn I will keep you in my prayers. Alida was a friend and I thought alot of her and enjoyed visiting whenever we ran into each other here in Rapid City.
Dawn, Darla and Damon: Giving you all a hug and letting you know we are thinking about you. Jake is feeling real sad about his “Gramma Apple” as is Jess. She is now home.

I was saddened to learn that Auntie Alida passed away. She was a lovely person and always had a hug and kiss for me. I loved her and will miss her.
Auntie’s dad Steve was my Grandma Edith Claymore Emery’s first cousin.
I pray that God will give you his precious comfort.
