Kathryn Westcott, 88, of Pierre SD, passed away Monday, November 10, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital TCU in Pierre after a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, Highmore with Rev. Martin Earl officiating. Burial was in the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 12 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Luze Funeral Home in Highmore.
Kathryn was born November 11, 1919 in Bridgewater, South Dakota to John and Elizabeth (Renner) Engel. The family lived at Gorman and Gettysburg, South Dakota where she later graduated from high school. After high school, she moved to Highmore and lived with her sister and brother-in-law Emma and Milo Jones and worked at Marshalls Café. On April 20, 1940 she married Clark Westcott. In 1940, they moved to Sheridan, Wyoming where they both worked on a large cattle ranch. In 1941, they moved to Yellowstone Park, Wyoming. Clark went to work for North Western Engineering, building roads in the park while Kathryn worked at a motel. In 1942, they moved to Portland, Oregon and they both worked in Kaiser Ship Yards; Clark worked as a welder and Kathryn as a riggers helper. Later they bought a discount gas station and operated that until the war was over. In 1946 they started Westcott Construction Co. which continues today. In 1954, their son Ed was born and they operated the construction company until retiring in 1978. Then in 2004 Kathryn moved to Pierre, South Dakota and resided at Parkwood which she really enjoyed.
Kathryn belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star in Highmore and was always very active with the National Cancer Society along with various election boards all her life. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Highmore.
She spent a great deal of time baking her delicious homemade bread, rolls, cookies, and anything else you wanted. She opened her home to everyone and usually treated them to warm homemade cookies and coffee. She loved her grandchildren very much, even when they scared her by driving too fast, horsing around with fireworks or playing on the frozen pond in her backyard. She was always so proud of all their accomplishments and anxiously awaited her first great grandchild.
Kathryn’s memory will be cherished by her son: Ed (Theresa) Westcott; three grandsons: Chris (Katie) Westcott, Cameron Westcott, and Reed Westcott; and a great grand baby, all of Holabird, SD; three sisters: Emma Jones of Rapid City, SD, Rose Machan of Gettysburg, SD, and Mildred (Marvin) Remily of Doland, SD; one brother: John (Marge) Engel of Ethan, SD; a host of nieces and nephews; and very special long time friend: Elinor White of Pierre, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clark in 1993; sister: Margret; and brothers: Bill and Clarence.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Kathryn's arrangements.
