Louis Schraeder, 75, of Faulkton passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion, SD. Louie passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

Louis Ray Schraeder was born in Gettysburg, SD to Fred and Margret (Mann) Schroeder on August 14, 1939. Louie grew up in rural Hand and Faulk County where he attended numerous country schools. On October 29, 1960 he was united in marriage to Karen Christiansen in Seneca, SD. Louie and Karen farmed and raised sheep on a farm outside of Rockham for 18 years. In 1984 they moved into Faulkton, SD where Louie resided until 2011. Louie was the bus superintendent for Faulkton schools for over 10 years. He also drove school bus for 20 years and enjoyed watching the kids grow up as he shuttled them back and forth to school. He always treasured the gifts the school children gave him -- he especially loved the sweets. Louis also worked for the Cenex service station in Faulkton.

Louie and Karen lovingly welcomed Monte Ray to their family on March 16, 1969. With open arms, they invited Karen's siblings, Pam, Millie and Donnie into their home after Karen's mother passed away from breast cancer in July 1969. Family was very important to Louie -- you often found him visiting friends and family.

Louie's great loves in life were his family, helping others, Twins baseball, his apple trees, and fixing everything from toasters to cars. Louie had a contagious laugh and he always joked with others. Long after he forgot the names of his loved ones, he continued to find humor in silly things and situations. His grandchildren would always do something to make him chuckle. Louie was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his son, Monte (Shelli) Schraeder of Hartford, SD and his three grandchildren, Riley, Karenna and Keahan. Louis is also survived by one sister Darlene (Jessie) Watson, Redfield, SD; two brothers, Herb (Ruth Ann) Schroeder, Powderly, TX; Herman Schraeder, Faulkton, SD; brother and sisters-in-law: Lauralee (Rodger) Lauritzen, Faulkton; Patty (Ron) Kadlec, Ipswich; Mary (John) Weiss, Overland Park, KS; Millie (Gary) Anderson, Paola, KS; Donnie Christiansen, Faulkton and many relatives.

Louis was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy Allen; his wife, Karen; his parents, Fred and Margret; his brother, Clarence; and brother and sisters-in-law: Kyra Schraeder, Iona Schraeder, Pam and Loren Seidschlaw, and Richard Christiansen.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Louie’s arrangements.
