Richard Miles Haigh, 74, of Wessington, died Monday, March 12 at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 17 at the Wessington Presbyterian Church with Brad Magness officiating. Visitation will be Friday, March 16 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at Rembold Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Wessington Cemetery.
Born of Howard and Laura (Ferris) Haigh at Doland, SD, August 28, 1937, Richard went to country school and later graduated from Wessington High School in 1955. June 18th, 1955 he joined the Navy, serving 9 1/2 years, 1st as a boiler man, later as a heavy equipment operator with the Seabeas. His time in service inspired him to dedicate much of his life after the Navy to helping others. He served 9 years on the Wessington school board and also helped an innumerable amount of veterans and families of veterans though his longtime service in the American Legion and as the Veteran?s Service Officer for Hand Co.
On November 15, 1962, after a two year courtship (and many a long distance letter) Richard married Karen Moriarty?.the love of his life. They lived in Port Hueneme, CA for a short time before moving back to South Dakota to fulfill their dreams of owning a ranch, and raising a family, Karen moving home first while Richard fulfilled his obligations to the Navy overseas in Southeast Asia.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; two daughters, Crystal (Rod) Domke of Highmore, SD and Shelly (John) Hoffmann of Wessington, SD; two sons, Justin of Austin, TX and Clinton (April) of Wessington; a brother Larry (Val) of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister Marjorie (Lowell) Patridge of Roseville, CA; a brother-in-law Ivan (Marlene) Koch of North Platte, NE; a sister-in-law Mary (Doug) Horn of Wolsey, SD; ten grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lester, Leeland and John; a sister, Marlene; a foster brother Wayne ?Bill? Knickrehm and 3 brothers-in-law, Lowell John, and Jack.

Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Richard?s arrangements.
