Fred Fanning was born November 16, 1925 at St. Lawrence, the son of Joseph Clyde and Margaret (Volkers) Fanning. He attended rural and St. Lawrence schools until graduating in 1944. During the next year, Fred attended the state college in Brookings until he enlisted in the United States Army. He departed for service in Korea returning 13 months later in November 1947.

Fred married Evelyn Carter at the parsonage in St. Lawrence on December 30, 1947 and to this union six children were born. The couple spent a short time in Sioux City, Iowa, where Fred worked at Robar Pest Control Company and their first child, Denny, was born before returning to St. Lawrence where the rest of their children were born and raised. Before farming, Fred worked in town for James A. Carter, Red Owl and Ben Franklin stores in Miller, St. Lawrence Lumberyard, drove truck for George Muth, and operated Fanning?s Standard Service station while owning and driving a school bus. The couple lived in St. Lawrence for a time having bought land and a house from Eva Fritts. Later, they lived on the farm of his parents, Margaret and Clyde Fanning, before moving to a farm north of St. Lawrence, and then to the farm 10 miles southeast of St. Lawrence in Pearl Township where their son John and family live today.

Farming and ranching was in his blood. Family and friends loved visiting the farm for celebrations and reunions. He liked traveling with Evelyn, visiting relatives in Arizona, Washington, and Florida. A few years back, Evelyn and Fred moved into St. Lawrence town where they lived until the present.

Fred?s greatest joy was his family ? he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Denny (Suzette) of Elk Point, Fred (Faris Hattab) of Seattle, WA, and John (Kim) Fanning of St. Lawrence; two daughters, Ruby Fanning (Dennis Aldinger) and Jane (Larry) Russell, both of Rapid City; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Margaret Graham of Huron and Clyde Fanning of St. Lawrence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Margaret ?Jo? Fechner, and two sisters, Mary Anna (Lincoln) Taylor and Lurabell Gaspar.
