Merlyn Parmely, 77, of Miller, died Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, April 18 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at Rembold Funeral Home. Burial will be at G.A.R. Cemetery.

Merlyn Parmely was born May 31, 1935 at Keeline, Wyoming, the son of Archie and Bertha (Daugherty) Parmely. His family moved back to South Dakota in 1940. He attended rural and St. Lawrence schools, graduating in 1954 from St. Lawrence High School. Upon the death of his father, Merlyn became involved in farming at an early age.

Merlyn married Marilyn Raske on June 1, 1956 at the Presbyterian Church in Miller, SD, and to this union four children were born. The couple spent their lives together on a farm south of St. Lawrence until her death on September 6, 1976. He continued farming and later married Bernice Schubloom on July 13, 1979.

Merlyn enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, camping, visiting with neighbors and his dogs.

He is survived by his wife Bernice; son, Mike Parmely (Roxanne Oakley) of Holabird, SD; daughter, Sandra (Neil) Stevens of Miller, SD; son, Rod (Jean) Parmely of Watertown, SD; and son Jeff (Margie) Parmely of Miller, SD; 12 grandchildren; Brad Parmely, Eric Parmely, Grady Oakley, Cole Oakley, Jessica (Stevens) Oolman, Casie Stevens, Andrea (Stevens) Jones, Clate Stevens, Jay Parmely, Jenna Parmely, Tara Parmely, and Trevor Parmely; and 6 great-grandchildren; Joslynn Parmely, Montana Parmely, Jerzy Parmely, Brayden Oolman, Jace Oolman, and Mia Jones.

Merlyn was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn, parents, and seven brothers; Donald, Clarence, Leo, LaVerne, Harold, Arvy, and Clayton Jr.

  2. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Merlyn. He was such a kind man who cherished times with family and friends. For so many years our families lived close to each other in Pearl Township and enjoyed many happy times together. He was always a good friend to my parents, Fred and Evelyn. May you have many memories to cherish of your time with Merlyn.

I will never forget his caring personality, great smile and general wisdom about anything you could ever want to know.
