Barbara Marlene Zephier (Haskell) of Lower Brule, SD passed away peacefully on January 22, 2015, at the Golden Living Center, Armour, South Dakota.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. MST, Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Eagle Butte with Mother Margaret Watson presiding. Burial was held at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery, LaPlant, SD, following lunch.

Two-night wake services was held at  7:00 p.m. MST, Monday, January 26, 2015 and 7:00 p.m. MST, Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at the church. Services will commence with a procession from the 4 mile junction at 4:00 p.m.on Monday. Visitation was held at the Episcopal Church fellowship hall beginning the evening of January 26 until the morning funeral service on the 28th.

Barbara was born March 17, 1935, in Lower Brule, SD; the daughter of Nephi Zephier and Marion Counsellor Buck. She was remembered from her school days for her piano playing and her beautiful singing. She graduated from Cheyenne Agency Boarding School, and she later met and married David D. Haskell, Sr. Through this union, they had nine children: Elizabeth Jeannette Haskell of Eagle Butte, SD; David Delbert Haskell Jr. of Mobridge SD; Timothy Edward Haskell (deceased), William Dennis Haskell (deceased), Dana Sherman Haskell of Las Vegas, NV; Tamela Kaye Haskell of Walt Hill, NE, Delaine Reed Haskell of Phoenix, AZ, Michael James Haskell of Eagle Butte, SD and Lori Lee Haskell (Rett Houdek) of St. Paul, MN.

Barbara left Eagle Butte and moved to Denver, Colorado, where she met her long-time companion Richard Stone. In their later years, together, they returned to Lantry/Eagle Butte, where they lived for 10+ years prior to her move to the Golden Living Center in Armour, SD. Barbara lived out her last 5 years there where she made fast friends and became a joy to the full staff. They have shared many memories and stories and expressed their grief and condolences. Barbara was an avid reader and loved to sew. She will be remembered for her comical ways and dry sense of humor, and her love of fashion and “outfits”. She left a lasting impression in the lives of all those she met and she will be missed by many.

Barbara is survived by her brothers: Clark Zephier (Pauline) of Fort Thompson, Russell (Susan) Zephier of Chadron, NE, and Ron Zephier of Rapid City; sisters: Elle Zephier of Scottsdale, AZ, Diane Zephier of Rapid City, Neva Zephier of Rapid City, and Charlotte Zephier (Dean) of Yoder, WY; seven children; 23 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; two sons: Timothy and William; three sisters: Jeannette Zephier, Charlotte Low Dog, and Geraldine Zephier, and one brother Freeman Zephier.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Barbara’s arrangements.
