Lewellyn Todd, of Gettysburg, having reached the age of 94 years, 2 months, and 24 days, went to his eternal home on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Avera Gettysburg Hospital.

Funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Grace Bible Church, Gettysburg.  Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2015 at Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m.

Lewellyn Maurice Todd was born to Charles and Annie (Siebrasse) Todd on January 7, 1921 near Agar, SD. He grew up in a family where hard work was taught and valued; play came after you had finished your work. Lewellyn graduated from Agar High School in 1939.

On January 28, 1942, Lewellyn married Alosia LaRosh in the Methodist Church in Gettysburg, SD. To this union, six daughters were born: Linda, Dorcas, Vickie, Peggy, Shirley, and Colleen. Lewellyn and Alosia’s first home was on Lewellyn’s parents place west of Agar. In 1944 they moved to his grandfather’s place where he farmed until his health would not allow it. Lewellyn loved farming, and he farmed with Alosia his entire life.   They were married for 73 loving years.

Lewellyn was a man of quiet strength, strong convictions, and a quiet spirit. Lewellyn was also a person of strong faith. He received Christ at the Open Bible Church in Onida when he went forward and received forgiveness for his sins. His favorite Bible verse was Joshua 24:15 "...choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” The Bible was his authority, and he wanted all of his girls to attend a Bible College for at least one year. He was active in the Methodist Church in Agar, then the Emmanuel Mennonite Brethren Church in Onida, and later, in the Grace Bible Church in Gettysburg. He served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, deacon, Bible study leader, usher, and a variety of other forms of service.

Lewellyn loved his daughters. He always provided for them, cared for them, and taught them about life. Examples of his love included having the car warm before they left in the morning, comforting them during storms, and teaching them about checking the oil, changing tires, and doing field work. He was a man of patience, and his son-in-laws believe that this was a learned trait on his part. He insisted on being on time and prompt when he had responsibilities. He was always willing to help, generous with what he had, and practiced being a good neighbor.

Lewellyn loved his horses. Many family memories consisted of horse and buggy rides, Christmas sleigh rides complete with bells jingling, and entering teams in the local parades. Many of these experiences were picturesque Norman Rockwell scenes.

In his final years his health began failing him. During these years, he was faithfully cared for by Alosia and daughters, Linda and Vickie. On April 1, surrounded by his family in the Gettysburg hospital, he was called to his eternal home where he met his Savior and Lord, whom he faithfully served his entire life.

Left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Alosia; daughters: Linda Todd, Dorcas Storer, Vickie Todd, and Colleen (Scott) McPeck all of Gettysburg, Peg (Jules) Glanzer of Hillsboro, KS., and Shirley (Paul) Nickel of Omaha, NE; brother, Arlo (Karen) of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles and Annie Todd; brothers: Orville, Ronelly, Tony, and Basil Todd; sisters: Rose Tarrell and Fern Joyce Pollman; two infant siblings: Cecil and Violet Todd; and son-in-law, Marvin Storer.

The family thanks the staff of the Avera Gettysburg Hospital for their wonderful care in Lewellyn's last days on earth.

Memorials will be given to a variety of mission work.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Lewellyn's arrangements.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I just want to express to all the wonderful family of Lewellyn Todd my sympathy, but I know he is safely Home.
I was a classmate to Linda and spent time there prior to a music festival we were having in Mobridge one year. I never forgot the peaceful atmosphere as Lewellyn and Alosia had Bible time. It was so warm and welcoming, a memory I could never forget tho it be maybe 55 years ago. May God keep his family in His care and His comfort.

  2. Shirley and Paul,

At times likes these we recall promises from our Father’s Testament and share them with family, prayerfully. These few words from Mt. Vernon’s heart to yours express our sincere desires for you and our trust in the Holy Spirit, knowing that He will companion and comfort you now and until the end of the earth.

Remember, our Father is with us always, working out everything for good. Death interrupts our earthly walk with Him and with our families, but it cannot disrupt His plans for our eternity. Even so, we experience grief at separation. Because of God’s grace, however, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. Through faith in the salvific work of Christ at Calvary, we know God wipes away tears and provides abundantly more than we can ask. Moreover, we have blessed assurance that God is able to keep us from falling, and to make us stand without blemish in the presence of His glory with rejoicing.

You are in our prayers and conversations often.
