November 27, 1956 ~ April 20, 2015

Dorthy R. Shoup, 58, of Gettysburg, passed away, Monday, April 20, 2015 at the Avera Gettysburg Hospital.

Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 24, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg with Father Jerry Kopel, celebrant. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 23, 2015, with a 7:00 p.m. wake service, all at the church.

Dorthy Ranee Doerr was born November 27, 1956 to Edward and Daisy (Murphy) Doerr. She was raised on the family farm with siblings Virginia, Dennis, Jim, and Madonna. Dorthy excelled in academics at Agar High School, and graduated in three years, like her dad.

On June 13, 1975, Dorthy married Rick Shoup. Together, they enjoyed fishing on Lake Oahe, gardening and canning, and the tranquility of living outside of town. Dorthy was an excellent cook, and her salsa was enjoyed by many. For years, Dorthy worked as a bookkeeper at Cenex, and for the last few years has worked at the Gettysburg Inn and Suites.   Her husband, partner, and friend Rick passed away on March 22, 2008.

Dorthy is survived by her brother Jim (Karen) Doerr of Gettysburg; sister, Madonna (Rich) Perry of Spearfish; brothers-in-law: Jim (Carol) Shoup of Onida and Ben (Loni) Shoup of Pierre; sisters-in-laws: Cheris (Arlo) Wagner of Agar, Marje Zebroski of Watertown, and Cindy (Ralph) Thoene of Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Dorthy in death are her husband, Rick; her parents: Ed and Daisy; and her siblings: Virginia Pearson, Dennis Doerr, and Carla Doerr.

Several months ago, Dorthy was diagnosed with cancer. After accompanying her sister, Virginia, to many of her doctor’s appointments over the last few years, it was Dorthy’s turn to accept help. Dorthy took radiation and chemo treatments, spent weeks in the hospital, and ultimately was forced to be on oxygen when she returned home. She took much of her failing health in stride, and was fortunate to be able to call upon her siblings, sisters-in-law, and friends.   Dorthy’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the Gettysburg ambulance and hospital staff, as well as her friends who made her stay at home possible.

Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.—Irish Proverb

J.M.J. I was sorry to hear of the passing of +Dorthy. May she rest in peace. I will gladly offer the Holy Mass for her Soul’s happy repose. May Jesus and Mary bless all those who mourn the departure of +Dorthy from this life.

  11. I am so sorry to hear the news about your recent loss of your dear family member and Friend.
With my sincere condolences, I write you today. Your family are in my
thoughts and prayers. I am sending you a note of comfort and a sincere hope that
you can find peace at this hurtful time. Remember, Jesus even shed tears for his
friend “Lazarus" in the Bible-died. Death is a very hurtful enemy of the living.
    (Revelation 21:1-4)
I found comfort with my mothers lost at age thirteen, by reading scriptures. I received a letter similar to this one, with a similar message. I found reading and searching for God and his promises helped. I visited a website (JW.ORG) and It is full of scriptures of Hope and information about the Bible, and I loved the resurrection hope the bible talks about. I am sure you will as well. Its encouraging and peaceful.
With all my prayers to your family, and deepest sympathy.
    Sincerely Yours,
    Helen West
