Gerald Dean Weischedel, of Hot Springs, formerly of Onida, passed away peacefully at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Friday, April 24, 2015 at the age of 87.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the United Methodist Church, Onida with Pastor Jeff Adel presiding.  Burial followed in the Onida Cemetery, Onida.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2015 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.

Gerald was born on April 29, 1927 in the Agar Township, South Dakota to Howard and Olive (West) Weischedel. He went to country school and later Onida High School in Onida, SD. He was in the service until being honorably discharged in January of 1947, when he then married his high school sweetheart, Doris Kennedy. Gerald worked on the family farm before being elected Sherriff of Sully County. In 1975, he and his family moved to Newcastle, Wyoming where he worked in the oil fields.

Gerald was an encouraging father, supportive grandpa, but above all else, he was a loving husband. He will be remembered for his candid humor, wealth of knowledge, and everlasting stories. If you had the opportunity to meet Gerald, you’ll know that he remembered your name and/or your story. No matter what type of background, pocketbook, or record you might have, Gerald saw you as a person. There were no boundaries or barriers in his eyes. There also was no mountain too high to climb. Whether it was cancer, a ‘nasty ole finger gnawing saw’, or a car accident, Gerald always fought his way to the top at all ages. He saw life as a never-ending adventure. Alongside Doris, they experienced it all. From bulls to horses, wood to engines, farmer to Sherriff, Gerald Weischedel will be remembered for his unconditional love to all that he came across.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Doris Weischedel; his six children:  Linda (Larry) Severson of Pierre, Terry (Nancy) Weischedel of Gettysburg, Melanie (Thomas) Geho of Douglas, WY, Brad (Kamile) Weischedel of Salt Lake City, UT, Julie Smith of Empire, LA, and Randy (Christine) Weischedel of Lennox; his sister, Delores Quaschnick of Wheatland, WY; his seventeen grandchildren; and his fourteen great-grandchildren.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Olive Weischedel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Central South Dakota 4-H Rodeo and/or Newcastle, WY 4-H.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Gerald’s arrangements.

So very sorry for your loss. We can know that he rests in a greater place and take comfort that you will be seeing him after your purposes are fulfilled. 12. Sorry to learn of your loss, but you were real lucky to have him as long as you did.

  13. When I was preparing the courthouse for county government day today, the bio Gerald wrote about his time as Sully County Sheriff slipped out from beneath the protective plastic. His was the only one to fall out of place – a penny from heaven, if you will. It was fun to re-read his memories of his time in office! He offered some pretty sage advice that would work for anyone, but especially for someone serving as Sheriff.

  14. Condolences to the family. I was so sorry to hear of Gerald’s passing. Prayers for comfort in your time of loss.

May God grace you with peace and strength in the days ahead. Vicki Kinder
