Catherine Felina (Davis) Vander Vorst was born on December 12, 1960 in Onida, SD to Sharon K. (Jackson) and William R. Davis.  She was the oldest of two daughters born to the Davis family and was always a daddy’s girl.  Cathy attended school in Gettysburg and played the guitar and clarinet while growing up.  She graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1979.

Cathy was united in marriage to Wayne Vander Vorst on February 7, 1981 in the United Methodist Church of Gettysburg.  To this union five children were born:  Bill, Mindy, Kyle, Brandon, and Morgan.  Cathy and Wayne began their life together in Gettysburg, moving to the farm in 1983. In 1993 they moved back into town.

Cathy was a hard worker and worked various jobs until her health no longer permitted. After graduating from high school she worked at the Oahe Manor and then the Ben Franklin. Cathy later worked many years at Chase Ford. She sold phones for Cellular One and ended her working years at the Wal-Mart of Pierre. Throughout the years Cathy almost always held a waitressing job full time or part time with many years of service at The Firehouse for Don and Kay Archer.

Cathy enjoyed spending time with her family. She played cards, board games, and spent time putting puzzles together and coloring with her family. She was also a Girl Scout Leader for Mindy’s troop. Cathy belonged to the Gettysburg Country Club, the United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau, the AAU Wrestling Club, and the Booster Club. She also enjoyed music, bowling, shooting darts, and crocheting afghans. She always loved animals; from the time she was little she would bring home a stray dog or cat. The Vander Vorst home always had many dogs, cats, and various other pets such as birds and fish through the years.

Cathy’s life will be cherished by her husband, Wayne of Gettysburg; her father, William R. Davis of Hot Springs; her children and grandchildren:  Bill and his son Tanner of Sioux Falls; Mindy (Cody) Stotz and daughters Brylee and Hayven of Pierre; Kyle of Brookings; Brandon of Aberdeen; and Morgan of Gettysburg; and her sister, Cindy (Don) Frost and sons Tyler of Aberdeen and Taylor of Gettysburg.  She is also survived by an aunt, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Cathy was preceded in death by her mother, Sharon K. Davis; one infant son, Jason; and her mother and father-in-law.

Memorials can be directed to the United Methodist Church building fund in Gettysburg, SD.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Cathy’s arrangements.

  21. I am so sorry to hear the news about your recent loss of your dear family member and Friend.
With my sincere condolences, I write you today. Your family are in my
thoughts and prayers. I am sending you a note of comfort and a sincere hope that
you can find peace at this hurtful time. Remember, Jesus even shed tears for his
friend “Lazarus" in the Bible-died. Death is a very hurtful enemy of the living.
    (Revelation 21:1-4)
I found comfort with my mothers lost at age thirteen, by reading scriptures. I received a letter similar to this one, with a similar message. I found reading and searching for God and his promises helped. I visited a website (JW.ORG) and It is full of scriptures of Hope and information about the Bible, and I loved the resurrection hope the bible talks about. I am sure you will as well. Its encouraging and peaceful.
With all my prayers to your family, and deepest sympathy.
    Sincerely Yours,
    Helen West
