Seborn Delos Iron Hawk was born on May 22, 1950 in Cherry Creek, SD to Marjorie Lucille White Weasel and Wilson Mike Iron Hawk. He had six siblings including: Alvina, Barbara Cleone, Roe, Haskell, Otto and Wayne Iron Hawk. Seborn attended school at Chamberlain, SD, Red Scaffold, SD, and Cheyenne Eagle Butte schools. He eventually obtained his G.E.D.
Seborn used to travel all over the United States; he had many stories about catching rides to different towns from the moving trains which he had to jump off of to get to his next stop. He eventually ended up in San Jose, CA and other California cities in 1969.
Seborn joined the United States Marine Corp in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1971. He told many stories about being in Vietnam and became more open about his time there in his later years. His stories included combat adventures, fighting a python, and waking up to a panther on his chest! Seborn told of many sad tragedies that he endured while being deployed. Throughout his time there, he knew he had to stay strong if he wanted to make it out alive and come home. After his deployment, he was considered one of the best soldiers in his artillery squad by Mr. Dewey Bad Warrior.
After his deployment, Seborn came home and went to school in San Jose, CA to become a welder. In addition to spending time as a welder, he was a lumberjack out in Rapid City, SD as well. He also enjoyed breaking horses, hunting with a bow and arrow, fishing for food, and tinkering on old vehicles—especially low rider vehicles.
He later met the love of his life, Colette LeBeau-Iron Hawk, in 1980. Seborn used to come to her office until he finally worked up enough courage to ask her to have coffee with him. They eventually got married in Eagle Butte, SD on February 1, 1988 and had two children: Destry Iron Hawk and Nicolette Iron Hawk. He also adopted Kellie LeBeau, Anjanette Rhene Lebeau, Justin Iron Hawk, and Daniel LeBeau; he loved all of his children very much. Seborn and his family later moved to Green Grass, SD and had many happy memories there. They enjoyed going to pow wows, going to sun dances, and traveling whenever they got the chance. On one family trip, they forgot their poles for their tent so Seborn made poles out of tree branches. In the morning there were leaves sticking out all over, and everyone got a good laugh out of that. At sun dances they enjoyed making their homemade coffee and breakfast from a fire pit.
Seborn taught his daughter Kellie how to bead and how to make moccasins. He made his own moccasins, wallets, pipe bags, and belts, and very much enjoyed working with leather. He also liked to draw, and work on carpentry projects around the house in his later years. Besides teaching beading and leather work, he also taught his children how to ride horse and he loved to go horse-back riding with them. He took care of Colette and his family in more ways than one. On one particular winter that they used a wood stove, it was so cold that Seborn had to go to their coral and cut the whole thing down in a matter of hours in order to keep everyone warm.
Seborn eventually moved their household to LaPlant, SD in 2005. After 2005, Seborn still enjoyed working around the house, but he was inevitably slowing down. After the loss of his wife Colette, he tried to stay strong and kept moving along with life knowing he would see her again someday. Seborn continued to take care of his horses and enjoyed cruising around in his Dodge, going swimming, visiting his friends, watching his favorite TV show Gunsmoke, and having his pot of beans, fried potatoes, and coffee in the morning.
Seborn was a man of his word and always left a good impression on everyone that was around him. He loved all of his family, his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren until the very end.
He is survived by his daughters: Nicolette Iron Hawk, Kellie LeBeau, and Anjanette Rhene LeBeau, all of Eagle Butte; his sons: Destry Iron Hawk, Daniel LeBeau, and Justin Iron Hawk, all of Eagle Butte; his sisters: Alvina Iron Hawk of Eagle Butte, SD and Cleone Iron Hawk of Newtown, ND; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Colette LeBeau-Iron Hawk; his brothers: Roe, Haskell, Otto and Wayne Iron Hawk; his parents, Wilson and Marjorie Iron Hawk; and his grandparents: Oscar and Ester White Weasel and Frank and Ester Iron Hawk.
He will be truly missed by everyone who knew him; may he rest in peace.
Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Seborn’s arrangements.
