Jay D. Fanning “Jaybird”, 52, of Miller, SD, died peacefully at home from an 8 month battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 17, 2015 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant. Burial followed at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Miller. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 16, 2015 with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and prayer service, all at the church.
He was born July 17, 1963 in Miller, SD to Jack D and Irene Mae (Beaner) Fanning. Jay was raised on the family farm and farmed for his father, then with his brothers before eventually going into farming for himself. Jay was the type person that made friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson, ATV’ing with his family and friends, but most of all he enjoyed having fun in whatever he did. Jay was one of those guys who just liked to go, relatives and friends never knew when he might show up.
Jay is survived by his loving wife, Bobi; step-children: Camrynn Clare, Rhett Lynn, and Lyndsay Kae; his mother Irene; his brothers: John (Penny), Gerald (Roberta), Jeffrey (Sherry), Randy (Teresa); brother-in-law: James B (Victoria) Gentile; nieces and nephews: Jimmy (Dawn) Gentile, Brett (Jessica) Gentile, Heath (Sarah) Fanning, Quentin (Johnay) Fanning, Blaine (Kristi) Fanning, Brandy Fanning, Bobbie Jo (Scott) Peterson, Jesse Fanning, Jacki (Chad) Dawson, Derek (Lora May) Fanning, Jack (Crystal) Fanning, Katrina (Rich) Damon, Matthew (Sarah) Fanning, Brittany (Nick) Rihanek, and Eric Fanning; In-Laws: Dale and Kae Bussell of Tucson Arizona and "Aunt" Gayle Bussell of Huron SD.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack D. Fanning; his sister, Marlene Gentile; brothers: Michael and Joel; niece, Sara Fanning; grandparents: Jack and Jessie Fanning, and Rupert and Mary Beaner; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Jay’s arrangements.

No words can express how I feel over the loss of Jay and that deep voice! The world lost a kind soul. Prayers to Bobi and the kids, Aunt Irene and the families. One thing I am certain of is Jay is out of pain and hanging with all the Fannings in Heaven! Tell my folks hi Jay Man!

Jay was special and I have many precious childhood memories of him. My heartfelt condolences to the family and to his wife.
