Neal Dean Stanley, 90, of Faulkton, passed away, Sunday, December 27, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the United Church of Faulkton with Pastor Bill Hoffman presiding. Burial followed in the Faulkton Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 1, 2016 with a 7:00 p.m., prayer service, all at the church.
Neal Dean Stanley was born in Brown County, SD, on July 25, 1925, to Harry and Ida (Engberg) Stanley. He was the seventh of nine children and was raised on the family farm. After graduation from Claremont High School, he served in the US Army for three years, including two years in the European Theater of WWII. After returning from the service, he attended business school in Minneapolis. He began a career in the grain elevator business, working in Cresbard, Ellendale, Huron and Claremont.
It was while managing an elevator in Cresbard, he met a sweet young girl at the local soda shop. He married Mary Jean Holm in Cresbard on October 1, 1950. While living in Huron, the couple was blessed with their son, Daniel Dean. After moving to Claremont, Susan Margaret was born.
In 1967, the family moved to Cresbard, where Dean managed the Bank of Cresbard, then Dacotah Bank Cresbard until his retirement in 1990. Dean and Mary moved to Faulkton in 1987, where they resided at the time of his death. Dean was a Faulk County Commissioner from 1990 to 1998. A member of the American Legion since 1946, a Mason for over 60 years, and secretary/treasurer of Lakeside Country Club for 15 years.
Blessed to have been his family is his wife of 65 years, Mary, of Faulkton; son, Dan, of West Fargo, ND; daughter, Susan (Steve) Miller, of Faulkton; grandchildren: Eric (Whitney) Stanley, of Eagan, MN, Matt Stanley of Billings, MT, Brian Stanley of West Fargo, ND, John (Jamie) Miller of Sioux Falls, Joe Miller of Tea, and Emily Miller of Sioux Falls; great grandchildren: Everett and Clara Miller of Sioux Falls; and brother Robert (Betty) Stanley of Claremont.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ida Stanley, brothers Harry, Lyle, Dale and Delbert, and sisters Arvilla Weaver, Emma Keller, and Grayce Hering.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Faulkton Area Medical Center Foundation.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Dean’s arrangements.
