Joseph Edward Tiona, 50, of On The Tree, entered the spirit world, Thursday, April 9, 2009 at IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Joseph’s Home with Rev. Norman Blue Coat and Leroy Bobtail Bear officiating. Burial followed at On The Tree Episcopal Cemetery, directed by Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte. An all night wake service was held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Joseph’s Home.
Joseph was born February 12, 1959 at Faith, SD to Joseph Howard Tiona and Darlene LaBlanc. He is the oldest of six children. Joseph went to elementary school at Cheyenne Eagle Butte and AIM Survival School at Rapid City. He was a medicine man since youth and has helped many people. Joseph participated in the Sundance at On The Tree and was a peyote man. Under this traditional way of life, Joseph has adopted many relatives. He has many fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and children that are too numerous and we don’t want to forget anyone. Throughout his life he had lived in North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming and was now at home in South Dakota at On The Tree with Father Matthew, Mother Darlene and Son Wylie.
Survivors include his mother, Darlene LaBlanc; father, Matthew A. Bear Eagle, Sr.; sisters: Lena (Terry) Flying By and Cylinda Bear Eagle; sister-in-law, Rosemary Bear Eagle; son, Wylie Miller; nephews: Randall Bear Eagle, Earl Grind Stone, Robert Grind Stone, Tyson Bear Eagle, Tyler Bear Eagle and Joseph Flying By; nieces: Nellie Grind Stone, Echo Whirlwind Soldier and Nevaeh Bear Eagle; grandchildren: Kaden and Ashley Bear Eagle, Jillian, Jaelyn and Savannah Grind Stone, Trishdyn and Isis Grind Stone and Lydia Alula; special auntie mom, Theresa LaBlanc; special hunka mothers: Marina McKay, Betty Bruce and Beverly Clown.
Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Joe Tiona; brothers: Brian Tiona, Matthew Bear Eagle Jr. and Robert Bear Eagle; maternal grandparents, Edward and Juanita LaBlanc; paternal grandparents, David and Hilda Tiona; aunt, Darlene Tiona; uncle, Veryle Tiona; and Noah and Eva Bear Eagle.
Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Joseph's arrangements.
