Hulan Flonoy Barbee was born August 18, 1926 in Goodlett, Texas to Flonoy and Gladys (Akers) Barbee. He was the oldest of four children. Hulan attended school at Goodlett High School; participating in basketball during his high school years. On December 27, 1944, he married Lorene Blount at Goodlett, Texas; to this union, six children were born. In 1944, Hulan enlisted into the United States Army, serving stateside during the end of WWII.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, Hulan worked in the business office at the Goodlett Cotton Gin. Hulan and Lorene’s first two children were born in Texas. In 1951, they took a chance; moving to South Dakota to rent a farm in the Onida area. In 1954, they bought a farm north of Harrold and farmed and ranched. During the 1960’s, Hulan drove the maintainer for Sully County and also helped one summer assisting in building the Oahe Dam. In 1982, they moved into Harrold and he continued to farm and ranch until the late 1980’s when he retired. They eventually moved to Highmore in 1996; later returning to Harrold in 2009 until both Hulan and Lorene moved to the Lakeside Assisted Living in Redfield in 2014.

Throughout the years, Hulan served the community on the Harrold School Board, Highmore City Council and Medicine Hill Cemetery Board, and was an active member in the American Legion. In his free time, he was an avid sports fan. He loved listening to baseball games on the radio, especially the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees. In his later years, he learned to work on the computer well enough to play card games, passing many hours playing poker and solitaire. Hulan loved traveling, especially if visiting friends and relatives on the way. Two of his most memorable trips were to Niagara Falls and the Royal Gorge Bridge. His favorite daily activity was having coffee with his friends, learning the current news and sharing a joke or two.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Lorene of Redfield; children: Mary (Larry) Nagel of Gettysburg, Roger Barbee of Karnes City, TX, Lori (Tom) Mattheis of Ellendale, ND, Teri (Mark) Rosenberg of Redfield, and Cary Barbee of Redfield; grandchildren: Kimberly (John) Christensen, Brandon Nagel, Kara (Jedrey) Baumann, Benjamin (Kerri) Barbee, Brian Barbee, Robert Barbee, Justin Davies, Jenna Barbee, Allison (Troy) Radermacher, Jared Kuehn, and Bryce Barbee; great grandchildren: Peyton, Olivia, Emma, Alan, Claire, Nadia, and Camryn; siblings: Glenn (Joyce) Barbee, Garland (Earlena) Barbee, and Florene (Ben) Short; and a host of nieces and nephews.
