November 14, 1947 ~ April 27, 2009

James D. Marso, 61, of Harrold, passed away suddenly Monday, April 27, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2009 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Harrold with Father Paul Nereparmpil officiating. Burial followed in St. John’s Cemetery, Harrold, directed by Luze Funeral Home of Highmore. A wake service was held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 1, 2009 at the church.

Jim was born on November 14, 1947 in Pierre, SD to Arthur and Genevieve (Stauble) Marso. Jim grew up and lived in Harrold all of his life. He graduated from Harrold High School in 1966. After graduation, he joined the South Dakota National Guards and was honorably discharged in 1972.

Jim wore many hats during his lifetime in Harrold. He was a bus driver, bar owner, city police officer and had his own construction company in which he hauled many loads of high quality gravel to the community. He also owned a backhoe and dug many of the graves in our two cemeteries over the past 30 years or so. He mowed the church yard and cemetery the last few years too. Most of these occupations were done as a second-hand career while working for 20 years for the Sully County Maintenance Department grading the rural roads north of Harrold.

Jim’s most avid passion in life was car racing. He was a true racer at heart – his passion started in the 60’s when he would steer a race car being pulled by a tow rope all the way to Miller and back. He was a car owner, pitman and one of racing’s biggest fans. If there was a race to be seen in the area, you could bet your last dollar Jim would be there. Jim met many of his best friends through the sport of car racing.

Jim never married but he always enjoyed family outings with all of his nieces and nephews and lots of good food. He also let you know if the menu did not include mashed potatoes and gravy (his favorite)!

Survivors include his mother, Genevieve Marso of Harrold, SD; brothers Dennis (Marlene) Marso of Harrold, SD and Larry (Joan) Marso of Marion, SD; nephews Steven (Petra) Marso of Sioux Falls, SD, David Marso of Sioux Falls, SD, Brian (Valerie) Marso of Harrold, SD, Ryan (Brandi) Marso of Sioux Falls, SD; nieces Angela (David) Lemieux of Pierre, SD and Amanda (Josh) Ellis of Sioux Falls, SD; great nieces: Jordyn Lemieux, Hannah Lemieux, Sydney Marso and Miya Marso.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Marso.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Jim's arrangements.

  6. Gen and family. You have my deepest sympathy. It said Jim passed away suddenly. That is hard to take. Lyle and I winter in Texas and I too lost my brother very suddenly so know what you are all experiencing.
Gen it is hard to take when losing a child before you. My dad experienced this also and you have my deepest sympathy. If you ever get to SF, stop by I would love to see you again. 7. My deapest sympathies to Gen ,Dennis and Larry and there family’s.
I had the honor of serving with Art while a deputy and sheriff of Hughes county. There were bad times and good times but Hughes county has never had a better officer in the Sheriffs office.

He loved his family and was proud of them .He talked a lot about Jim and advised that he was afraid he would have to get a second job to keep Jim fed if he stayed home.

I am sure that Jim and Art are together and have a lot to catch up. God will be with them.

God bless and be with the Marso family, especially in this time of sorrow.

  8. My sympathy to all the Marso family at this time of Jim’s death. My earliest memories of Jim were when I baby sat with him when they were our neighbors out on the farm. I would have come to the funeral this morning but have another funeral that I am attending, that of the mother of one of my co-workers. I do work in Gettysburg but continue to live in Hoven. God Bless all of you. Pat Rausch
