Mildred Davis, 101, of Miller and formerly of St. Lawrence, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.

Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 8, 2016 at the St. Lawrence Community Church with Pastor Scot Tutt officiating.  Burial followed at the St. Lawrence Cemetery.  Visitation began one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Mildred Ellen Weaver was born February 15, 1915, to Orville and Bertha (Fischer) Weaver in Wessington, SD.  Mildred was the first born and lived on three different places in the Sand Creek area.  Mildred and all of her siblings were born at home. Her earliest memories are of going to school at Sand Creek, which was a large consolidated school, and included a four-year high school. She rode to school in a horse drawn wagon chassis. Mildred attended Hand County rural schools, graduating from St. Lawrence High School in 1933.

She married Archie "Brownie" Davis on October 1, 1934. They lived and farmed all their lives in Hand County. Mildred worked for the US Postal Service in St. Lawrence for 30 years, retiring as Postmaster in 1985. Mildred and Brownie bought the St. Lawrence Blacksmith shop in 1945 after moving into town, selling it in 1965 and then farming until Brownie's death in 1978.

She was a life member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary. She loved to read and sew, made many afghans over the years for friends and family members. She was a member of the local library book club.

She is survived by two daughters: Darlene (Glenn) Puncochar, St. Paul, MN and Carol Davis, Newell, SD; four grandsons: Curtis Puncochar, Scott Puncochar, Jon Spomer, and Bradley Spomer; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Marie Kemper, Anoka, MN and Mildene Turpin, Rapid City, SD.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and four brothers: Melvin, Clarence, Mike, and Darrow.

Memorials are preferred to the Hand County Library or charity of your choice.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Mildred’s arrangements.

  4. I think Aunt Mildred was about 96 when she rode to Onida with me and I was amazed that she was able to get in and out of my pickup all by herself. Such a spry sweet lady. She was always going to show me where the Davis homestead was at north of Ree Heights, but we never did get that trip accomplished. Gary Davis
