Kenneth Wherry, 87, of Faulkton, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Faulkton Healthcare Center.

Funeral services was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the United Church of Faulkton with Pastor Bill Hoffman presiding. Burial followed in the Faulkton Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2016 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.

Kenneth M. Wherry was born May 18, 1928 in Faulkton to Charles and Jennie (Sorensen) Wherry. Kenny was raised in the Faulkton area where he attended and graduated from Faulkton High School.

On October 13, 1953, Kenny was united in marriage to Marion Ann Fought in Faulkton where they made their home. In 1954 Kenny enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and returned home to his family. Kenny went to work from 1956-1959 for Standard Oil, doing bulk delivery. He then went to work for Kegler Farm Equipment and Community TV and Appliance before being appointed Sheriff of Faulk County, serving for 25 years. Kenny retired as Sheriff on December 31, 1990.

Kenneth enjoyed all of his hobbies. They included metal detecting, fishing, doing watch repair, and fixing and refinishing furniture. He was a member of the United Church of Faulkton, Methodist Men, South Dakota Peace Officers Association and the National Sheriffs Association.

His memory will be cherished by his five children: Camille (Jerome) Heier of Aberdeen, Bruce of Faulkton, Celeste Wherry (Robert Alexander) of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Bradley (Yumi) of Seattle, Washington and LaVar of Aberdeen; six grandchildren: Charissa (Eric) Peterson of Aberdeen, Amber (Todd) Letcher of Brookings, Joshua Heckler of Port Saint Lucie, FL, Alicia (Gary) Storkamp of St. Paul, MN, and Brandon and Bryce Wherry of Seattle, WA; three great-grandchildren: Tailyn Bendewald of Aberdeen, Tyler Heckler of Port St. Lucie, FL and Chloe Peterson of Aberdeen; one brother: Robert Wherry of Faulkton; nephew, Scott Wherry and niece Cindy Kuhl.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marion; and one sister, Dorothy Wherry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the South Dakota Peace Officers Association or the United Church of Faulkton.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Kenneth’s arrangements.

  5. I had the honor and privilege of working for Ken when I first became an officer in SD. He was well respected by the community and his staff. We remained friends all these years and he will be missed.

  11. It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Kenny. I worked with him on a number of occasions and he was always professional and smart. He was one of the kindest people that I ever met. Law enforcement missed him when he retired. I will always remember him and smile when I do.   14. Kenny was such a great friend to my late husband, Irvin Kleeblatt of Faulkton. I met Kenny and Marion in 1954 and always loved them. We all had such fun together all the many years that we visited Faulkton. I do pray that he is with God and rejoicing with his precious wife, relatives and friends.
