Lyla Busse
October 12, 1921 ~ April 4, 2016
Lyla Busse, 94, of Highmore, passed away Monday, April 4, 2016 at the Highmore Health, Highmore, SD.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Burial followed at the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2016 with a 7:00 p.m., prayer service, all at the church.
Lyla was born on October 12, 1921 in Perkins County on the Grand River near Bison, SD where her parents, Jorgen and Julia (Thoreson) Jensen, homesteaded. The youngest of their four children, she grew up with a love for riding horse, and graduated from Bison High School. Lyla often reminisced about riding her horse Bobby to school while dodging prairie dog and badger holes. She attended business school in Minneapolis, and came by train to Highmore where she was employed by First State Bank, and met her future husband, Clarence Busse.
Clarence and Lyla were married in Little Rock, Arkansas on January 16, 1942 before Clarence deployed for WWII. To this union, six children were born. During Clarence’s deployment, Lyla traveled with sister Ruth to California where she worked in the office at an airplane factory. Eventually, Lyla and Clarence made their home on the edge of Highmore, where all were welcome, particularly her children’s friends. Lyla enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor from gardening, cooking, and the menagerie of farm animals with family and friends. She also enjoyed cutting the hair of all who asked.
Lyla was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, PEO, the Senior Citizens Center, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Gold Star Mother. Lyla enjoyed traveling with Clarence, playing cards, baking, particularly cinnamon rolls, and golfing. She even hit a hole in one on two at the Highmore Golf Course. Lyla also had a love for dancing and music and waltzed well into her 90’s.
Lyla passed away April 4, 2016 at Highmore Health. She will be remembered as a kind and gracious lady, always willing to lend a helping hand. She was filled with love and loved by all who knew her.
Survivors include her children: William (Lyda) Busse of Rapid City, Jan (LaVaughn) Busse of Highmore, Steven (Peg) Busse of Rapid City, and Cheryl (Keith) Fawcett of Ree Heights; fourteen grandchildren: Lisa (Jason) Haverly, Stephanie (Doug) Kittleson, Kirsten Busse (Seth Pfost), Holly (Robert) DiMartile, Amanda (Jayson) Gesme, Andrew Busse, Daniel (Kari) Fawcett, Matthew Fawcett, William Busse (Corissa), Adrian Busse (Matteo), Danika Busse-Johnson (Jesse), Morgan Busse (Camilo), Erin Fawcett, and Kristin (Weston) Kusser; fourteen great-grandchildren: William and Addisu (Lisa), Hollis and Ivy (Daniel), Lyla, Lars, and Liv (Mandy), Caleb and Elijah (Stephanie), Nora and Ella (Kirsten), Coral (Holly) Manu and Margaux (Morgan); and many nieces and nephews.

My sympathy goes out to your family. She was a great lady with lots of class and spunk. I always enjoyed visiting with her.

Steve and family, Sending you sympathy at the loss of a very special lady. It is so hard to lose your Mother and Grandmother. She was always so caring and giving and had a smile I won’t forget. Thoughts and prayers to you all.
The wonderful memories your Mom has left you with will be a part of your lives forever. The smell of cinnamon rolls, the music of a waltz, her laughter and hugs will keep you smiling and keep her memory alive in your hearts forever. Hugs and sympathy from Spokane.
What a wonderful tribute to your mom, Jan! Know we are thinking about you, LaVaughn & your family especially during this time of many emotions.
When we lose the people that we have always looked up to in life, it is so hard. Lyla was quiet yet so friendly and sweet, a charming woman…someone that I liked to be around. I’ll always think of her when we use her recipe for Baked Beans. In fact the recipe card reads: Lyla’s Queen Beans.

Dear Bill, Jan, Steve, Cheryl and all the families, Your mother was such a beautiful, gentle soul who was a favorite of the Markley girls. You probably got tired of having us come out and try to ride your horses. Smelling those homemade cinnamon rolls was delightful. I can picture Mom and Lyla having such fun talking and laughing at each others jokes, playing cards when they could and talking on the phone. They will be together with Arda’s Mom, Ruth, and their husbands reunited. You are in my prayers and thoughts. Wish I could be there to celebrate her life with you this weekend. I will be offering my Mass and prayers for her this Sunday. Blessed Peace for all of you.
Jan, LaVaughn and family, please know that our sympathy is with you at this time. We so enjoyed visiting with Lyla during our trips back to Highmore.
I knew Lyla for over 30 years. I always enjoyed working with her, visiting about life and business, and her cookies whenever we met. She would get a smile on her face and ask the same question, "Hi Tom, how’s my money?" She was a wonderful lady. My sympathies to Jan, LaVaughn, and the entire family.
Jan and family, sorry to hear of your mothers passing, my condolences.
Sorry to hear of your loss. Our deepest sympathy Dr. Dick and Kathy Splichal
Thinking of all of you at this time. Lyla was always so happy to visit with at HHCC and always had that great smile. Her face always lit up when I mentioned her cutting my hair and how much I enjoyed that. She will be missed. Cherish the memories. Sincere Sympathy, Mary
My deepest sympathies go out to all of Lyla’s family. I met Lyla in 2003 while I was caring for a client in her home and she would come and visit with her. I learned what a wonderful person that she was. She would drive those that couldn’t get to church, to church. She would take those that could not get around for themselves any longer, in drives around town so that they could see what was happening, and just to help them get out of the house. She gave of herself to so many. Lyla had the sweetest spirit and truly the kindest person I have ever known. I feel it a privilege to have known Lyla. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all.
Our sincere condolences on your loss of Lyla. I was so glad to see you all last week when I was in Highmore. I have many pleasant memories of our high school days together, many times hanging out at the Busse place. Lyla certainly was a real gem of a person.
I am so very sorry to hear of Lyla’s passing. She was such a beautiful, sweet lady and I know she will be missed by all who knew her. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
