Lurabel Evans, 94, of Miller, passed away Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.

Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 12, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church, Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating.  Burial followed at the St. Lawrence Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Lurabel Purrington Evans was born on November 22, 1921 to Tracy and Iona (Snider) Purrington at her grandparents farm in Beemer, Nebraska. Her family moved to South Dakota in 1934. She attended school at Hiland Township and she went to high school in Saint Lawrence, graduating in 1940.  She went on to General Beadle College for a one year teaching certificate.  Her teaching career spanned over 16 years.

In April of 1945, she married Staff Sargent Albert Evans, in November of 1947, they welcomed a son, Jimmie.  They resided in Hiland township until 1959, then moved to Miller.

Lurabel was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sunshine Birthday Club, TOPPS, Rainbow Welcome Club and Red Hats.  She enjoyed reading, sewing,and crossword puzzles.  Lurabel enjoyed going to rodeos and camping with Bub, she also loved her several dogs, especially Louie.  To all who knew Lurabel she was never seen without wearing one of her many hats.  A trip of a lifetime for Lurabel was when she went with Russel and Marcia Purrington to Canada and Alaska.

She is survived by her grandsons: David Evans and Mike Evans; granddaughter, Deb (David) Roth; her great-grandchildren: Laura and Justin Evans, Heidi Roth and Shane Evans; sister, Ellen Parmely; daughter-in-law, Karen Evans; sisters-in-law: Gladys Jensen-Reynolds, Joanne Evans, Elaine (Darrell) Peterman, and Marcia Purrington; brother-in law, John Evans; and a host of nieces and nephews. 

Lurabel was preceded in death by her parents, Tracy and Iona Purrington; husband, Albert; son, Jimmie; brothers: James and Russell; brothers-in-law: Wayne Parmely, Howard Jensen, Ivan Reynolds, Francis Evans, and Gene Evans; sister-in-law, Cecil Boalias; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Roth. 

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Lurabel’s arrangements. 
A Visitation was held on May 11, 2016 at 4:00 PM at Reck Funeral Home, 313 E. 1st Ave. in Miller, South Dakota 57362

  4. As a little girl growing up,Lurabel,was a good friend to my mom,and we went to the same church!She always wore her hats! Pretty hats! LOTS of hats!!I was in awe of all her hats! She was always SO nice! God bless her soul,and may she rest in peace!Im sure many will miss her smile!

Lurabel was one of my teachers in a little one room country school and Bub was one of my dad’s best friends. She always was so pleasant, patient and caring.
