Margaret “Meg” (Stroup) Holbrook, 63, of Gettysburg, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg, with Pastor Jeff Adel presiding.

Margaret “Meg” Stroup was born September 24, 1952 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to Shirley (Hoffman) and David Theodore “Ted” Stroup. Shortly after, they moved to Gettysburg where she grew up and attended Gettysburg Schools.

Meg always had a fearless sense of adventure and lived her life free spirited. She was the first female automobile sales person in Sioux Falls at Frank Stenson Chevrolet in the late 70's/early 80's but primarily in the Black Hills area where she worked in diverse industries from selling advertising for KJHB Radio, promoting tourism for South Dakota with Black Hills Badlands and Lakes to owning/operating home daycare centers in Rapid City and Phoenix, AZ finally ending her career life with a long standing position in retention with Citi Bank.

Meg traveled throughout the United States and not only had the opportunity to visit Europe where she played tourist in England, Amsterdam, and Norway; she later returned to Norway having shipped her Harley Davidson Motorcycle and Corvette and rented a houseboat where she lived for a year learning to read, write and speak fluent Norwegian. A local newspaper wrote an extensive article about her, as it is quite unique for females to operate motorcycles living the life many others just dream about.

Meg learned to ride motorcycles as a teenager, a passion she carried throughout her life. As an avid motorcycle enthusiast she was President of Women in the Wind; a female motorcycle club which encourages women to learn to safely operate motorcycles while helping the Sioux Falls community through funds raised during various motorcycle related events.

While living in the Black Hills, she appeared in the play "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" exemplifying her love for the arts. She also had a natural flair for decorating homes and a great fashion sense. Having a strong desire to share her experience, strength and hope with everyone; her common greeting was "God Morning/Afternoon". Her unwavering faith in God helped her in every facet of life, she carried that message to future generations by teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Touching the lives of so many people who came to love her and feel blessed to be able to call her friend.

Those left to cherish Meg’s life is her daughter, Shelly Gonzalez; grandson, Nicholas Hemsher; and great grandson, Oliver Hemsher all of Sioux Falls; daughter, Linda (Bruce) Alexander-Nunn; grandson,  Brent Alexander; great granddaughter, Emily Paige Alexander; grandson, Kyle Alexander; great granddaughter, Abigail McDonald; and great grandson,  Mchail Alexander all of Springdale, AR; brothers: Calvin Stroup of Lompoc, CA and David Stroup of Gettysburg; sister, Pamela Rose of West Bend, WI; and niece, Jacqueline Stroup of Spearfish.

Meg was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Deane T. Stroup; and sister, Sharon (Dan) Sheldon.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Meg’s arrangements.

  5. Margaret was my cousin and I always only new her to be outgoing, a bit of a character and doing whatever she felt like, when she felt like it. Too many of us have spent our lives never experiencing a fraction of what she did. Shelley, I think I was your first babysitter ever outside of your G-ma, I’ll always remember Meg and pray she is at peace now. (probably off riding in the clouds!) God Bless.
