Susan Holmes
April 12, 1910 ~ June 12, 2009
Susan Lucille Holmes, 99, of Pierre and formerly Gettysburg died peacefully Friday, June 12th at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre.
Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Luce Funeral Home in Gettysburg with Pastor Paul Smith officiating. Visitation was held with family present starting at 10:00 am.
She was born near Seneca, SD on April 12th, 1910 to Frank and Lizzie (Prader) Mouchet and was the oldest of 7 children. She later moved to Gettysburg where she met and married Robert (Bob) L. Holmes. They farmed for many years and later moved to town. Susie was an excellent cook and was known as such throughout the community.
She worked in many local restaurants and did catering. She and her daughter, Ruth Starks, owned and operated the restaurant at the 5 mile corner west of Gettysburg for many years. Her granddaughter described her as follows: She was an incredibly independent and strong willed person. Until January of this year, she lived alone in her own apartment. She moved into assisted living after a fall required hospitalization. What a great run at life, healthy and of solid mind right up until the end. It’s something most of us will never experience. But even at 99, it’s hard to say good-bye.”Her family will miss her deeply.
She is survived by her four children: Ruth (Clyde-deceased) Starks of Gettysburg, Lucille (Tom) Leckey of Pierre, Loren (Nancy) of Mt. Pulaski, IL, and Jim (Susan) of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren, and eight step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Susan's arrangements.

Our hearts and prayers are with you all. I so enjoyed visiting with Susie when I visited with Aunt Lucy and Uncle Tom. She was a wonderful and kind lady!
I wish to express my sympathy to the Holmes family in the time of their sorrow.
To Susie’s family…..Our sympathies to you. We are in Rapid so will not be at the memorial service but our thoughts are with you. We have many memories of the great lady and her family, especially my classmate Jim. Treasure all your memories of her and God bless.
