Rodney Gene Permann was born January 4, 1946 in Gettysburg to Jacob and Ida (Bamesberger) Permann. He attended rural country school and graduated from Gettysburg High School.
In 1976 Rod was united in marriage to Shirley Kramer. They made their home in Gettysburg where they raised their three children: Amber, Ashley and Dustin.
RP worked numerous occupations in his 70 years. Some of which included Ma Bell in Denver, BMS for Mick Bliese, Orville Schmidt Oil & Gas, RPM for Bill Hall, owned and operated the Blue Tip Tavern, bartended, ran a taxidermy business and hunting guide, groundskeeper for the Gettysburg Country Club, Nauman Spraying Service with Lonnie Burnham, Weatherton Construction, Potter County Implement and spent the last years at Hinckley Farms.
RP served on the Gettysburg City Council and was always ready to lend a hand with any community project. As an active member of the country club, he rarely missed a Thursday night of golf and cards.
RP loved the outdoors and spent many hours hunting, fishing and relaxing below Bob’s. He was a diehard Bronco’s fan, he loved his family and turned into a whole new person when he had his grandchildren, but you could still find him at the Legion at 5:00!
Rod’s life will be cherished by his wife, Shirley of Gettysburg; his children: Amber (Nathan) Vandersnick of Brookings, Ashley (Brad) Halvorson of Minnetonka, MN and Dustin of Salt Lake City, UT; his grandchildren: Katie and Emily Vandersnick and Emma and Viktoria Halvorson; his siblings: Norva Giese, Harrold (Peggy) Permann, Betty (Jerry) Oxner, Hess Huber; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, sister, Adeline Cowgar and brother, Herb Permann.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are directed to Keep Hope Local, c/o Stacy Larson, 127 Hilltop Dr., Gettysburg, SD 57442.

Shirley and kids – I am so sorry to hear the news of Rodney’s passing. He was truly one of a kind and I will miss his jokes and contagious laugh!! I’m hoping that all the many happy memories you guys have together will make this difficult time a little easier to get through. If I close my eyes and try hard I can hear him singing and playing Christmas carols at the Legion. Hugs and prayers to everyone that knew him! Amy
Shirley, Amber, Ashley & Dustin – We were so shocked and saddened by the news of RP’s passing. All future golf tournaments and events at the GCC will never be the same. We have so many fun and fond memories of golfing and time spent with him. He was, of course, an in demand golfer and if you were lucky enough to be on his team, there was never a dull moment. We consider ourselves so blessed to have known him. Our deepest sympathies to you all. Golf on RP!

Our world has suffered a tremendous loss. Rodney was one of the most upbeat, enjoyable people one could ever be around. While we’ve had somewhat limited opportunities to spend time with him over the past years; all our memories are positive. Great memories, including; but not limited to: demonstrating his driving skills at the former "Toadstool" scenic overlook (now Bob’s), where he was way ahead of the times by drifting a Chevelle the full circle of the driveway, riding in a bit soggy Pontiac convertible to the State Fair, dancing "up a storm" at the house near the golf course, scuba diving before he & Shirley’s wedding at the Chief Gall Inn, enjoying his self-taught piano playing, etc. We all will miss him "a ton". Rest in peace.
Shirley, Our sincere sympathy to you and your family. My Mom (Marie Anderson) gave music lessons to Rodney – always had glowing reports regarding his lessons. May God be with you at this sad time. Remember all the fun times you two had together. May he rest in peace. Marlene Job-Branham
