Jerald James “Jerry” Price Cowman, 84, Highmore, died August 18, 2016 while in the care of the compassionate staff at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Ft. Meade, South Dakota.
Memorial Mass was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 25, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Highmore with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant. Burial with military honors followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Highmore. Visitation began at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2016 followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.
Jerry was born in Highmore on November 7, 1931 to Margaret (Moore) and Harley Price. Following the death of his father when Jerry was 5, he was adopted when his mother married Kenny Cowman.
After graduating from Highmore High School in 1949 and his marriage to Renata (Weiss) in 1952, Jerry joined the United States Marine Corps spending 14 months in Korea. For his service he was awarded United Nations and Korean service medals with two campaign stars and recently received a Republic of Korea Ambassador for Peace medal.
After his term in the service they returned to Highmore where he worked for years at Newton’s Food Store. They also spent several years in Huron where he operated the Valet dry cleaning route. Upon their return to Highmore, he worked for the Hyde County Highway Department, owned the Frosty Freeze, and later became an insurance agent.
Jerry was a member of the American Legion, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hyde County Action Club, and Highmore Senior Citizens Center. He loved all things Irish, prolific reader, spinner of vinyl records, and known for his pointed quotes—better known as Jerryisms.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Renata of Highmore; children: Jeryl (Rod) Bean of Belle Fourche; Jack of Stafford, VA; Deb (Herb) Jones of Yankton; Dianne (Jimmy) Roberts of Hulett, WY; Jerald “J.P.” (Judy Clark) of Klamath Falls, OR; and Joni of Pierre; sister, Peg (Becky); brothers/sisters-in-law, Willard (Jean) Weiss, Maxine Myers, Lois Weiss, and Jack (Patty) Weiss; 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James; sister, Sharon; grandson, John K.; and brothers/sisters-in-law, Raphael (Neva) Weiss, Jerry Myers, and Delbert Weiss.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Jerry’s arrangements.

I always enjoyed visiting with Jerry and I remember many conversations when I was in high school about our track team. I remember him coming to cheer us on at regions one year and he and Renata sent us Good Luck balloons as we headed off to the state track meet.
