Louis Ducheneaux

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m MDT, Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at the Old Agency Building in Eagle Butte with Fr. Brian Lane officiating. Burial followed at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. A wake service was held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2009 at the Old Agency Building in Eagle Butte.
Louis was born May 2, 1924 at the Cheyenne River Agency to Baptiste J. and Amy Ella (Hawk Bear) Ducheneaux. He attended Moreau River Day School. At the age of nineteen, Louis entered the United States Navy on April 17, 1943 and was honorably discharged February 8, 1946. He proudly served his country during World War II. After the service, he did maintenance work on government owned buildings. Throughout his life, he also did maintenance on reservation roads, relocated tribal members from flood areas and hauled cattle.
In 1981, he moved north of the Swiftbird School and remained there until his passing. On July 2, 1985, he married Francine Von Wald.
He is survived by his wife, Francine Ducheneaux of Swiftbird; three children: Trudee Southard of Sioux Falls, Linda (Rocky) Jergenson of Rapid City and Terry Ducheneaux of Sioux Falls; brother, Alvin Ducheneaux of McLaughlin; and sister-in-law, Bertha Ducheneaux of Eagle Butte.
Louis was preceded in death by his son: Dean Ducheneaux; brother: George Ducheneaux; sister: Aleta Ducheneaux Shelep; and sister-in-law: Alvera Ducheneaux.
Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Louis’s arrangements.
