Loren Toennies, 89, of Cresbard, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Faulkton Senior Living, where he has resided since January of 2014.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, Cresbard, with Pastor David Birkeland presiding. Burial followed in the Cresbard Cemetery. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Luce Funeral Home, Faulkton, with visitation one hour prior.
Loren Elmer Toennies was born at home on August 8, 1927 to Walter and Lillian (Bowers) Toennies. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Cresbard, graduating in 1945.
On June 11, 1950, Loren was united in marriage to Lucille Spanier. They made their home one mile south of the “home place”; raising kids, crops and livestock.
He was a longtime member of the Cresbard United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Men, served as a Sunday school teacher, was a 60+ year member of the AF & AM Masonic Lodge, was past master and noble grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Cresbard and Faulkton, belonged to the National Farmers Organization, and served on the Township board, the FHA Board and the Wecota Cenex Board.
Loren will be dearly held in the hearts of his family and friends for his love of farm life, tilling the earth, bringing in the harvest, and tending to his herds and flocks. He had a God-given gift of conversation, and particularly enjoyed talking about farming.
Loren’s memory will be cherished by his wife of 66 years, Lucille of Cresbard; sons: Gerald (Judy) and Gene (Sylvia Salwei) of Cresbard and Mark (Kelly) of Faulkton; daughter, Lorie (David) Miller of Sioux Falls; 19 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Gjernes of Chelsea; sisters-in-law, Judy Toennies of Cresbard and Arlene (Leon) Smith of Northville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was welcomed into his eternal home by his parents; mother and father-in-law: Henry and Gladys Spanier; son, Dean Toennies; granddaughter, Amy Toennies; great grandson, Everett Kallas; brother, Merlvin Toennies; and brother-in-law, Joie Gjernes.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Loren’s arrangements.

Sorry to hear of Lorens passing. It is never easy to say goodbye to our loved ones. Prayers are with you at this time.
I am so sorry for your loss. The death of a love one can be extremely difficult to cope with. Many have found comfort in the many promises found in God’s word the bible. Acts 24:15 has special meaning for many. There it speaks about the resurrection. By means of the resurrection our loving Creator, Jehovah God, will restore life back to those sleeping in death as promised (Titus1:2). Please embrace this wonderful promise of God during this difficult time.
My deepest condolences on the loss of your husband, father, and grandfather. This time of separation is never easy, but you will find strength in remembering Loren from this day forward. My sympathy to you all.
Grandpa Loren was special in his own way. He loved farming and loved trees. I just watched a wonderful video tribute. Thank you for putting that together. Brought back special memories.
I am so sorry for your loss my love goes out to you. Loren was a very sweet,loving,and caring man. I remember when I had to stay with you guys. He was so caring about my sister and myself concerning my father. So prayers and love going your way.

I will miss this kind and gentle man, he gave life to the fullness of joy, fun, laughter, smiles, and heart aches, Loren would try his darn nest to get you to smile, life is to short, enjoy the moment, live life to the fullness and be happy. His laughter, smiles will be missed. We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Loren. We know what a pillar he has been to his family, neighbors, and the community. I first met Loren as friends of his son’s. I quickly learned how much his family meant to him and how proud he was of all of his kids. Later I worked with Loren as a farmer and rancher in Faulk County. His stories were endless. Dear Toennies Family, I have memories of Loren sitting at Merlvin and Judy’s table. He always gave me a kind and hearty hello as Julie and I ran through the kitchen. Loren was a good man. Thinking of you!
