Leon L. Rogers was born April 11, 1923 in rural Potter County, SD to Arthur L. and Lillian (Thompson) Rogers. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Gettysburg High School.

On June 10, 1946, Leon was united in marriage to Delphine Hansen at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg. They were married for 68 wonderful years and lived most of their life in the Elida Township, seven miles southeast of Gettysburg. Leon farmed until 1983 when he retired and moved into Gettysburg. He and Delphine also ran the local bowling alley from 1962-1964. In 1987 they moved to Rapid City before returning to Gettysburg in 1989, where he remained until the time of his passing.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving on the board of trustees. Leon loved to spend time fishing and playing cards with Delphine and his lifelong friends, Delores and Roger Moore.

After Leon and Delphine retired, they spent many winters in the south and took several bus trips which they very much enjoyed.

Survivors include his siblings: Dale (Phyllis) Rogers of Sioux Falls and Bonnie Comeau of Gettysburg; sisters-in-law: LaJean Hansen of Gettysburg and Arliss Hansen of St. James, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delphine on October 12, 2014; brothers-in-law: Johnny and Terry Hansen; nephew, Kirk Hansen; and great-nephew, Erik Hansen.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Leons’s arrangements.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I too have lost many family members and miss them very much. I have found much comfort in the Bible’s promises. Please read Revelation 21:3-5 and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

  2. Leon was my cousin as well as a friend. I will miss him dearly.

  3. Leon was a loving husband, uncle, and friend. He will be missed.

  4. I’m so sorry for your loss. I have no doubt that God will remember him and keep his memory safe. He will surely be glad to bring him back to life in a perfect world when suffering will be no more and we will all welcome back our loved ones that are asleep in death. (Revelation 21:4 & John 5:28, 29) May our loving Father bring your family the peace and comfort only He can provide.

  5. Almost finished restoring a 1953 3/4 ton Blue Studebaker truck that Leon purchased new from Dakotah Motors in Aberdeen. Looks like he still had it in 1984 according to a registration slip. That’s a bit more than 30 years. It has just under 46,000 miles on the odometer.

Found some more papers dating to 1990 so at least 37 years of ownership!
