Gerald Shaving, 60, of Eagle Butte passed away Sunday, October 23, 2016 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND,
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., MDT, Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Old Agency Building, Eagle Butte with Reverend’s Marjorie and Matthew Uses The Knife presiding. Burial will follow at Blackfoot Ascension Cemetery. An all-night wake will begin at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Old Agency Building, with a procession from the 4-mile at 4:00 p.m.
Gerald “Jaws” Shaving was born February 5, 1956 at the Old Cheyenne Agency to Paul and Grace (Useful Heart) Shaving. His mother would tell him that he was her birthday present as they shared the same birthday. Gerald attended school at the 212 Day School, Cheyenne Eagle Butte J.H. and High School. He went on to attend the Wilmar Vocational Institute where he study carpentry.
In 1978, Jaws met Madeline Handboy. They made their home in Marksville and Swiftbird, SD. On December 28, 1980 they had their first daughter, Gracie Faye. Then on November 23, 1982 they welcomed their baby girl, Sara Lynne. Through the years they lived in various places to include: Hancock, Morris, and Wilmar, MN, and Rapid City, Pierre, Spearfish, and Gettysburg, before settling in Eagle Butte, SD in 1994. Here they built their home with the Habitat for Humanity project.
Gerald enjoyed visiting friend and family, reading, building, listening to music on a record player, watching movies, coloring with his grandchildren, drawing, cooking, and eating seafood.
Gerald worked for the City of Pierre and other companies as a road laborer, construction worker, and did carpentry. There wasn’t too many thing he couldn’t fix or attempt to fix. He was always willing to lend a helping hand as he was a kind and generous soul.
The light of his life were his grandchildren: Marques “Big Man”, Gwyneth “Pooh”, Eli “Waskley Wabbit”, Phoebe “Chubby”, Kayla “K.J.” and Gia “Rollie Pollie”.
Gerald will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and his stories.
Jaws is survived by his wife of 38 years, Madeline “Joycie” Hand Boy; daughters: Gracie Shaving of Eagle Butte, Sara Blue Arm of Rapid City and April Swiftbird of Eagle Butte; grandchildren: Marques, Gwyneth, Eli, Phoebe, Kayla and Gia; brothers: Mike Shaving and Francis Shaving of Eagle Butte; sisters: Jennie LeBeau, Rita Shaving and Sonya Shaving, all of Eagle Butte; many nieces, nephews and grandchildren, to many to mention; and his foster family: Don and Lynnea Mayer of Seattle, WA; sister, Sarah Skutt and brother, Tim Mayer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents: Peter Useful Heart and Lucy (Egna) Useful Heart; paternal grandparents: Charley Shaving and Jennie (Swift Eagle) Shaving; brother, Charlie boy; special cousins: Cortez, Heartsy, Spike, Ally and Donna; foster brother, Peter Mayer; son, Babe Lee; daughter, Cherie Agneaux and special uncle, Levi Useful Heart.
Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Gerald’s arrangements.




My Condolences for Geralds passing but he lived a life that he wanted to live so he did. He was my Brother Corny’s good Kola as well as mine. RIP Gerald.
