Rich started his career as a hog farmer before starting his own business: RDP Construction, which he ran for over 20 years and later became a real estate agent. He also spent 41 years as an Auctioneer, always using the saying, “No auction too big…or too small!”

Rich was a kind and generous man, giving back to his community and the things he believed in. He did all of this by being involved in the South Dakota Auctioneer Association, the National Auctioneer Association, and the Dakota Kruzer Car Club. He was inducted into the South Dakota Auctioneers Hall of Fame in 2014.

Rich was blessed to be able to enjoy the things he loved with his family including auction sales, collecting cars, attending Nascar races and watching rodeos.

Those left to cherish his life is his wife, Joy Penrod of Gettysburg; his children: Angie Fillaus (Jeremy Anderson) of Mount Vernon and Jeremy (Jodi) Penrod of Watertown; grandchildren: Gracie, Bella and Wyatt Fillaus and Madelynn Penrod, Tyler and Kaitlynn Rudebush; mother, Marilyn Penrod of Pierre; sister, Janet (Gary) Janisch of Elkhorn, NE; brother, Jay (Nichol) Penrod of Pierre; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Betty Herman of Hoven; brothers-in-law: Bob (Mary) Hermann of Anoka, MN and Ed (Naomi) Hermann of Gettysburg; sisters-in-law: Lynn (Donnie) Karst and Ginny (Arlyn) Minnerath all of Hoven; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Obert Penrod; brother-in-law, Billy Hermann; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
