Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Harrold Auditorium with Father Chester Murtha officiating. Burial followed at St. John’s Cemetery, Harrold. Visitation began at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, January 8, 2017 followed by a 7:00 p.m. rosary and prayer service, all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Highmore.

Katherine Elizabeth was born January 17, 1926 to James and Eugenia (Hollerich) Schmitgen. She grew up on their family farm northwest of Harrold where she attended country school with her two sisters, Margaret and Mary.

On February 9, 1948 Katherine married Lowell Ogle. They lived with Fred Ogle on a farm that he purchased northeast of Harrold in 1918. She not only gained a husband but a father-in-law as well. He lived there until 1972 when he moved to Pierre.   Katherine remained on the family farm until her death. To this union, seven boys were born: James, Clarence, Larry, Dave, Dean, Michael, and Gary. Katherine continued to farm after the loss of her husband Lowell in 1967. Lowell’s niece Lisa Casady came to live with Katherine in the summer of 1982 and she treated her like a daughter, introducing her as the girl she raised.

Katherine worked on the farm all her life and was as tough as nails. There was not a job that she couldn’t do.   From raising the boys, to raising hogs, sheep and cattle, she did it all. She loved her animals more than anything. It was nothing for her to raise a stray. Anywhere from pigs, lambs and calves to deer, skunks, raccoons, squirrels and birds. She would save them all. She loved her cats and dogs, her pot-bellied pigs, her exotic chickens and ducks and her miniature horses.

Katherine had a green thumb. She always had many plants in her house, numerous flower beds in her yard and would care for a large garden. She loved to be outdoors and was always found in her yard making a new flower bed or rock bed. Her yard was her pride and joy and she loved to decorate it for Halloween and Christmas.

Katherine was an amazing cook. Everyone knew her for her famous chicken and gravy. She always made it on days the guys worked cattle and on Tuesdays when Jim owned the bar in Harrold. Her chicken and gravy always drew a crowd. She would cook for her boys and crew during harvest and haul it all out to the field. She enjoyed cooking at the sale barn in Highmore for years where she made numerous life-long friends.

She enjoyed life and was always on the go. She liked to travel, going on a cruise or a bus tour. She loved to bowl and bowled with her friends for many years. She loved being a grandma and spending time with her family. She enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s and great- grandchildren’s many activities and just recently became a great-great-grandma. She was a member of the VFW, St. John’s Catholic Church, the Harrold Birthday Club, The Ballroom Swishers, and the Red Hat Society. She always had a smile and a conversation for you no matter where you saw her. She was loved not only by her family, but all who met her.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her sons: Clarence Ogle of Rapid City, Larry (Deb) Ogle of Woonsocket, Dave (Judy) Ogle of Harrold, Dean Ogle of Augusta, KS, Mike Ogle of Harrold, and Gary (Kristy) Ogle of Spokane, WA; niece, Lisa Casady (Judge) Jessop of Presho; sisters: Margaret Pope and Mary DeRouchey; sisters-in-law: Lucille Ebert and Avis Pardun; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell; parents, James and Eugenia Schmitgen; father-in-law, Fred Ogle; son, James Ogle; and daughter-in-law, Lorna Ogle.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Katherine’s arrangements.
