Rick Martinmaas, 60, of Orient, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the Deuel County Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake. He was surrounded by his wife, Patty and family members.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 13, 2017 at St. Liborius Catholic Church, Polo. Burial followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Polo. Visitation began at 6:00 p.m., followed by a 7:00 p.m. rosary and prayer service, Thursday, January 12, 2017, all at the church.
Richard Allen Martinmaas was born November 1, 1956 in Faulkton to William and Wanelda (Miller) Martinmaas. He attended grade school at St. Liborius, Polo and graduated from Polo High school in 1976. He remained active in the family farm business, Martinmaas Dairy, while establishing his own farm north of Polo.
He lived life as if every day was his last. He said his daily prayers with the sunrise and the sunset. His motto was “Work hard, play harder”, and like his brother Lon lived by the motto “Every day is a good day, some days are better”. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting. All that heard or witnessed the legendary stories would know him better as Ricky Crocket. He was the man, the myth, the legend! He was a beloved friend of all, and never shied in spending late nights “solving the world’s problems”.
On February 13, 1988, Rick married Janet Ann Peterson at St. Liborius, Polo and through this union welcomed three children, his greatest gifts: Jessica, Scott, and Joni.
Rick’s stayed busy farming and hunting, but always made time for his children, attending games and coaching their various sport teams. Janet’s favorite saying was “A family that prays together stays together”, Rick always added “A family that works together stays together”. Family bonding took place in the dairy barn and on their farm. Janet passed away in 2007.
Rick was lucky enough to find love, not once but twice. Rick married Patty Rogers on July 15, 2016, witnessed by their children, families and many beloved friends in Miller, SD. They danced the night away under the stars in Orient, SD.
Rick was truly one of a kind! He was known to many as “Uncle Rick” not just by his nieces and nephews but by his children’s many friends. His big joyful smile, his sparkling blue eyes and contagious laugh would warm anyone’s heart. He would do anything for the people he loved. With heavy hearts we will lay to rest our hero, beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and most importantly friend.
Ricks memory will be cherished by his father, William “Bill” Martinmaas; wife, Patty Martinmaas of Miller; children; Jessica (Tim) Boldt of Volga, Scott Martinmaas of Bath, and Joni (Ben Johnson) Martinmaas of Alcester; siblings: Ray (Becky) Martinmaas, Orient, Randy (Jan) Martinmaas, Orient, Sandy (Larry) Aesoph, Highmore, Kathy (Gary) Remmers, Orient, Paulette (Charlie) Appelhof, Kranzburg, Lori (Mike) Kalkman, Miranda, Julie (Rod) Spartz, Kranzburg, Mike (Laura) Martinmaas, Orient, Mary Lynn (Tom) Lesselyoung, Redfield, and Brad (Shelly) Martinmaas, Orient; step-children: Matt (Nikki) Rogers of Ree Heights, Heather (Matt) Poindexter of Sioux Falls, and Dylan (Karren) Rogers of Ree Heights; grandchildren, Kennedi Janet Boldt, Madelynn, TJ and Rylee Rogers; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members too numerous to count.
He was welcomed into Heaven by his loving mother, Wanelda; brother Lonnie; his late wife, Janet; their infant children; three nieces, one nephew and one great nephew.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Rick's arrangements.

Condolences from our Family to Yours. 🙏
Hugs and prayers to the entire Martinmaas families, Rick was a super great guy and will be missed by so many people. RIP Rick
My sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Rick. The loss of our dear loved ones can be very difficult and distressing to cope with. True comfort comes in knowing that Jehovah ( Psalm 83 : 18 – God’s name ) is not the cause of our pain, suffering and death, Hebrews 2 : 14 tells us the source. May you be comforted in knowing that Jehovah hates death ( 1 Corinthian 15 : 26 ) and promises to eliminate death forever and bring ones sleeping in death back to life on a cleansed earth. ( John 17 : 3; Isaiah 25 : 7,8; Revelation 21 : 3-5; Acts 24 : 15; Psalms 37 : 10,11, 29 ) . Also, may your own good and loving memories of Rick help to soothe your hearts, as we remember that our dear loved ones now safely rest in the loving memory of our Grand Creator, Jehovah God, waiting for the fulfillment of His promised purpose for us all. Sincerely
Our deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Martinmass family.

To the family so sorry for such a great loss. Rick was a kind man I had the pleasure to work with. Prayers for your families during again such a difficult time.
Comforting to know that Rick rests safely in heaven. We know from God’s word that His love for us is so great, "that even the very hairs of our heads are numbered". (Luke 12) We can be confident that our prayers are heard, and comforted that God will support us in our sorrow. We can also look forward with certainty that we will see Rick again. Now we need to rely on our faith, family and friends. It’s all we have. My prayers go out to you and your family.
May your strong faith and the love of your entire family guide and support all of you during this very difficult time. The entire Martinmaas family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Rick and family, some of the things we will miss: That giant handshake, the laughs, the late night discussions, the road hunts, eating chili and hamburgers and just being your friend. We will miss you Rick! Eric, Jake and Larry.
Rick, we enjoyed pheasant hunting with you, family and friends for many years! If I missed a shot, you would always nail that bird. (well almost always). We enjoyed watching your family grow up over the years, and had great times. We love you all. Bob Gerlicher Scott Gerlicher
So sorry to hear of Rick’s passing after his struggle to recover from such a tragic accident. I have great memories of Rick when I was a little kid and adolescent growing up in Polo. I too remember him as a jovial, energetic and caring person. I’ll certainly miss him but I won’t soon forget him. My prayers are with his children, his wife, his brothers and sisters, extended family, friends, and all who knew him and cared for him.
No words can express the sadness I feel for this tragedy. Indeed, both Rick and Lonnie were one of a kind and I feel privileged to have known them both. My sincere sympathy to all of you.
Rick made the world better with his every smile. His brotherhood was felt far and wide by me, my sons, and most everyone he met. His love will stay with us and he won’t be forgotten. A hero in every way and in his every action.
So sorry my dad Mark is not well enough to make the trip to Rick’s services. He has many fond memories of times with Wanelda and the rest of the other Miller cousins. Our deepest sympathy.
