Jack Hall
January 2, 1926 ~ September 29, 2009
A Celebration of Jack's Life was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 12, 2009 at Christ Episcopal Church in Gettysburg with Father Lyle Martin officiating. A committal followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Floyd W. Hall, Jr. (Jack) was born on a farm in Downing, Missouri on January 2, 1926 to Floyd W. Hall, Sr. and Dona (Hope) Hall. Upon graduating from high school in 1943, Jack enlisted in the U S Army Air Force with a non-committed cadet status achieved in 1942. His induction took place at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in June 1943. After basic training he was sent to Colorado Springs, CO for B-29 gunner’s school and then on to Pratt, KS where the 21st Air Force was being developed. His next assignment was to Fort Laughton in Seattle, WA where he was later shipped overseas. Jack arrived on the Tinian Islands in the Marianas where he joined the 313 Bomber Wing of the 20th Air Force. While on the Tinian Islands, he witnessed the second atomic bomb being loaded onto the B-29 plane, The Great Artiste. The war ended four days later on September 2, 1945. Jack left the islands by boat on the way to Hawaii with his final station to be Jefferson Barracks where he was honorably discharged in February 1946.
Jack returned to Downing, MO. Not being able to find work he and some buddies joined Boxburger’s Combine Crew in Vernon, TX. They traveled through the plains harvesting wheat finishing in Gettysburg, SD. Deciding to stay in the Gettysburg area Jack took a job with Bill Sheldon’s cement crew. With winter upon him he became a butcher with Dwight’s Super Value.
Jack met the love of his life, Velda Weber, who worked the lunch counter at Dwight’s. They were married on June 18, 1949. Their first daughter, Sandy, was born in Gettysburg before moving to Minneapolis, MN in 1951 where Jack attended Dunwoody’s Institute of Auto Body Repair. Upon graduating he returned to Gettysburg working for two years at Earl Olson’s Chevy Garage. Jack started his own business, Jack’s Body Shop, in 1956, where he provided auto body and glass repair, wheel alignment, air conditioning and towing services to Gettysburg and the surrounding area for 45 years retiring in 2001. Children Gary, Greg, Janet and Kateri were added to this growing family.
Jack was active in the National Guard, American Legion and VFW. He served as a volunteer fireman and city councilman for the town of Gettysburg as well as being a long time member of the Gettysburg Country Club. Jack enjoyed his family, golfing, gardening, bird watching and collecting antique single-cylinder engines.
Jack is survived by his four children: Sandy (Phil) Dinan of Aurora, CO, Gary (Kathleen) Hall of Centennial, CO, Janet (Jim) Crawford of Waterloo, IL, and Kateri (Norm) Feck of Parker, CO; daughters-in-law: Nadine Hall Simon (Dean) and their children Bailey and Hayden and Holly Hall Iversen-Wellnitz; two sisters: Hope Curry and Maxine Brown of Memphis, MO; one brother: Leo (Nita) Hall of Leesburg, FL ; twelve grandchildren: Leah and Brittany Tamarkin; Rachel Mitchell and Sarah Hall; Makenzie, Jared, and Emily Hall; Megan, Kristin, and Erica Crawford; and Samuel and Isaac Feck; and two great grandchildren: Miya McCloud and Brinlee Logan-Hall.

To Gary and the family of Jack. So sorry to hear of Jacks passing — I have such great memories of Jack – many a days I spent at ‘Jacks’ with Dad while we had work done. And all the great laughs about our ‘UFO sighting’ right there in Gettysburg. When I last saw Jack, about a year ago, he still had that ‘Santa’ twinkle in his eyes, and a smile to share. He will be dearly missed by all of you as well as the many friends he made over the years. May your faith be your strength and all our thoughts and prayers help you during this difficult time.
Sandy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. It has been a diffucult year for you. I pray that God will grant His peace and understanding and allow you the ability to look back on your parent’s lives with happines and a smile.
To the Hall Family,
We are so sorry for the loss of Jack. May you feel the warmth of God’s arms wrapped around you as you go through these most difficult days & weeks. Him & Velda are back together. Rejoice in that. Prayers to you all.

I met Sandy’s Dad 20 years ago but I had the honor to be with him during many visits to help him care for and visit Velda in the last 18 months.
We talked of many aspects of his life, including his WWII service, and he was an amazing man. This loss, so soon after the loss of our beloved Velda is especial-ly hard on Sandy and her sibling’s. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
I will always remember him smiling and joking. I love my grandpa and he will never be lost in my memory.
My family sends its regards and best thoughts to Jack’s family and friends. This was a big loss to everyone.
Best wishes,
Craig, Laura, Isabel and Josephine Dinan
My sincerest condolences and my thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

Sandy & Family, We were so sorry to hear about your dad. I remember all the good times at your house with your dad always so good to us. Last time we saw him he was at the Rock w/ his coffee buddies smiling – always smiling! Know he endured no suffering and is now with your mom like they’ve always had been. Our hearts go out to all of you.
Sandy, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Remember your dad and all the happiness, smiles, and special times you two shared.

The angels sang as they welcomed Jack into the paradise of Heaven to join his wife. They are now together, dancing on streets of gold and praising our Lord as they wait for the remainder of their family. We should celebrate and be jealous. We wish you all peace and sweet memories of them and their lives.
We are so sorry for your loss. You have gone through a lot as a family, in a very short time. You have our deepest sympathy. I have so many good memories of Jack – beginning way back when I worked summers at the shop doing bookwork. I have had some really nice conversations with your Dad recently and 2 things always stood out — how proud he was of all of you, and how much he was ready to be with Velda again. He told me the story of how they met in the grocery store, and he said that it was the luckiest day of his life when “that little girl from the lunch counter smiled at him”. Bless you all.
Kathie & Nick
I am sorry that our whole family could not be there with you at this time of your needs. Grandma Evafae said she would of been there with you if she could of made the trip, she had even talked to Don and I about going. She sends her sypathy.
My heart is with you and your family, Sandy. In reading your father’s obituary, I can understand why he and my father were friends–both were pilots, butchers, American Legion and volunteer firemen.
Your father was not just a good friend to my father, Bob, but a patient and great role model for myself and my little brothers! I remember piling into his tow truck in the winter to head out to the ditches by the Air Base to go sledding in the salvaged hood of one of the cars from his shop! Jack would pile us all into the blanket lined hood; hook that up to his truck and pull us along in the ditch–flying over the culverts! No casualties! I even fell out of the cab one time going around the corner–in town, no less. He stopped, let me climb back in and then on to sledding!
That’s only one of many good memories, which I’m sure you have too. My prayers are with you all at the loss of this fine man.
Cynthia Clark, one of Beryl’s 11.
our dear grandpa, we love you so much. im going to miss your kissis, hugs, great jokes and that raspy laugh it could make me smile and laugh no matter what.I remember waking up in the morning when we came to visit and running to the shop to play with your awsome toys, well at least i thought they where. My favorit time was going golfing with my dad and you, I got to drive the golf cart. I felt on top of the world. we joked and laughed about you taking my birthdays away every time i went on the grass. I think you must have driven on there too god took a few of your birthdays away but its ok because i know your hart was broken when grandma left. I’ll miss you both and my memorys of you both are locked in my hart.

Sandy and the entire Hall fmily, my deepest sympathy to all of you on the passing of Jack. I have had the honor of knowing Jack and Velda for over 30 years and have enjoyed the times we all spent together, usually at Sandy’s house. While you share your sorrow today, do not fear, for Jack and Velda both live. They live through every breath you, your children and grandchildren take, their legacy lives on. A part of Jack and Velda are in them and will continue to be with you and them for eternity. Take pride in your family and cherish every minute for time is short, but memories are long. God Bless all of you in your time of loss.

Jack is missed by so many people. His hard work, his generousity, and his focus on his family is remembered. May his family and friends take meaning and inspiration from his life.
May many memories of your dad bring you peace and comfort during this very difficult time.
I am so sad to hear of Jack’s passing. My prayers, thoughts and love go to you all. Thinking of Jack makes my heart smile. I will forever remember his twinkley eyes, his big smile and the way he would snicker and laugh like he was up to something. He would tap me on the arm, lean in and tell me a joke or make a little comment to make me laugh. Usually when we were suppose to be being good! Velda would give him a look and he would giggle more. It was good to be around Jack because you always knew you were loved.
Jack has gone to his beloved Velda. Their laughter will fill the room. He will be missed by all who knew him. A special ray of sunshine. I will never forget him.
Your family is in our thoughts and prayers!
I’m so sorry to hear of Jack’s passing.
Jack and Velda were such a big part of our family. Their friendship has meant so much to us.
I doubt I’ll ever forget Jack’s sense of humour and willingness to help a neighbor.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
